Bobcats hold off Tigers twice to earn important road sweep

BOONEVILLE – No. 6 Jones picked up an important road sweep Saturday at The Plex, using a three-hitter from Reanna Nieman in the opener and stranding Northeast's tying run at third in the nightcap to win 3-1 and 4-3.

Jones improved to 29-11, 16-4 in the MACCC while Northeast fell to 28-20, 7-13 MACCC.

The Bobcats will host Meridian and Mississippi Delta at The Bank April 17 and 19.

Jones 3, Northeast 1

Kaleigh Steverson and Brooklynn Montana hit solo home runs and Nieman struck out seven, allowed three hits and just one run in the win.

Elise Jackson's two-out, infield single in the second allowed Makynlie Jones to score off a throwing error and give Jones a 1-0 lead.

Steverson went yard in the third and Montana in the fifth to make it 3-0. Jayden Sawyer appereared to go yard behind Montana in the fifth, but was called out of the box for a strike. She later walked.

Ava Meeks' two-out, RBI-double in the sixth cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Tigers got the tying run to the plate in the seventh after a one-out double, but a putout at third on a wild pitch and groundout ended the threat.

Seven Bobcats combined for nine hits. Jones and Montana had two each.

Jones 4, Northeast 3

The Tigers got the tying run 60 feet away in the bottom of the seventh, after already scoring two runs, but Sawyer got a groundout again to third to sweep the day.

Sawyer's solo home run to left broke a 1-1 tie in the third. It was her team-leading 20th of the year, second-most in NJCAA Division II.

Emily Mizelle's RBI-groundout in the sixth and Montana's RBI-double in the seventh increased the lead to 4-1.

Allowing only two hits through six, Sawyer had to bear down in the bottom of the seventh.

Northeast loaded the bases with one out. An RBI-groundout and RBI-single made it 4-3, and after a wild pitch, the tying run was at third before Caitlyn Carnathan grounded out.
