Bobcats drop 27-7 decision to East Central on Homecoming

ELLISVILLE – Jones College scored on its opening possession of its Homecoming game here Saturday afternoon.
 
But the Bobcats would not score again in dropping their third straight game of the season.
 
East Central defeated Jones 27-7 at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field. The Warriors improve to 5-2 overall, 3-1 in the MACCC South. The Bobcats fall to 3-4 overall, 1-3 in division play.
 
Jones took the opening kickoff and drove 62 yards in 11 plays. Quarterback Blake Murphy (Plantation, Fla.) tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Marlon Lindsey Jr. (West Jones) and Christian Baglione's extra point made it 7-0 with 6:13 to play in the first quarter.
 
Two possessions later, Jones drove from its own 29-yard line to the Warrior 36. The drive stalled and Baglione missed on a career-long 53-yard field goal attempt.
 
The Warriors tied it early in the second quarter with a quick, 60-yard, three-play drive. Chris Tucker threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Jaquel Dukes and Cade Mangum's extra point made it 7-7 with 12:38 to play in the first half.
 
ECCC took the lead for good when Landon Sims fired a 34-yard touchdown pass to Eelijah Singleton to end an 83-yard, nine-play drive. Mason Jenkins blocked the extra point and the Warriors led 13-7 with 7:23 to play in the second quarter.
 
It remained that way until the final period. 
 
The Warriors recovered a Bobcat fumble at the Jones' 15. Seven plays later, Keshawn Henley scored on a 3-yard run with 5:57 left and Mangum's conversion made it 20-7.
 
Carson Graham then intercepted a Bobcat pass at the Jones 27-yard line. 
 
Nine plays later, Sims threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Henley with 1:51 remaining and Mangum's PAT ended the scoring.
 
The Bobcats had 270 yards of total offense, 106 of those in the opening quarter. ECCC had 332 yards passing and 365 yards of total offense. 
 
Gerald Modest Jr. (Miami, Fla.) carried 21 times for 69 yards. Murphy was 14-of-20 through the air for 114 yards and a touchdown. Cannon Crowder (Presbyterian Christian) was 7-of-13 passing for 43 yards and an interception. Lindsey had six catches for 49 yards and a score.
 
D.J. Cloyd (Columbia) and Isaiah Lindsey (West Jones) each had eight tackles to lead the Bobcats. Lindsey had two tackles for loss and a sack. Kennon Loftin (West Jones) had 1.5 TFLs and Tyrice Holloway (Bay Springs) had two pass breakups. 
 
For the Warriors, Sims was 17-of-24 for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Singleton had five catches for 81 yards and Lawerence Armstrong had five catches for 79 yards. Keoni Denny led the Warriors with 10 tackles.
 
Jones will host Southwest at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 for its final home game. ECCC will host Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday.
