ELLISVILLE – The Jones College Bobcats continued their mastery over Southwest with a 37-21 victory here Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.
It was the 14th straight win over the Bears.
Jones piled up a season-high 570 yards as they snapped a three-game losing streak and evened its record at 4-4 overall. The Bobcats are 2-3 in MACCC South Division play. Southwest drops to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in division play.
The Bobcats had 22 first downs, 240 yards rushing and 330 yards passing.
Quarterback
Blake Murphy (Plantation, Fla.) completed 12-of-21 passes for 222 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Running back
Gerald Modest Jr. (Miami, Fla.) rushed nine times for 93 yards and a score.
Isaiah Atkins (Harrison Central) had three catches for 87 yards,
Antarral Pinkston (Forest) had three catches for 80 yards,
Harrison Knight (Foley, Ala.) had one reception for a 72-yard touchdown,
Marlon Lindsey Jr. (West Jones) had four catches for 48 yards and a score and Modest caught two passes for 28 yards and a touchdown.
The Bears struck first when Gary Bailey Jr. picked up a blocked field goal attempt and ran it back 66 yards for a touchdown. Lyndell Boatman's extra point made it 7-0 with 41 seconds left in the first quarter.
Jones answered immediately after the Southwest kickoff when Murphy connected with a wide open Knight for a 72-yard touchdown pass.
Christian Baglione's (Northwest Rankin) extra point tied it at 7-7 with 29 seconds left in the first period.
The Bears regained the lead when Chris Hunter scored on a 2-yard run to end an 85-yard, 10-play drive. Boatman's extra point made it 14-7 with 4:42 left in the second quarter.
The Bobcats tied it up on their next drive when Murphy hit Modest for a 20-yard scoring pass to conclude a 65-yard, nine-play series. Baglione's kick tied it at 14-14 with 1:46 left in the first half.
Jones took the lead for good on its next possession when they drove 56 yards in seven plays. Baglione booted a career-long 50-yard field goal as time expired and the Bobcats led 17-14 at halftime.
The Bobcats extended the lead late in the third quarter when Modest scored on an 8-yard run to end an 80-yard, five-play drive. Baglione's PAT put Jones up 24-14 with 2:08 showing.
Southwest answered with an 80-yard, seven-play drive. Jordan Mills tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Scott and Boatman's extra point made it 24-21 with 11:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.
But the Bobcats took the ensuing kickoff and went 70 yards in eight plays. Murphy connected with Lindsey for a 5-yard scoring strike and Baglione's kick made it 31-21 with 8:21 left.
Ky'Yon Harris' (Union) 2-yard run capped a 46-yard, seven-play drive with 3:34 left. The extra point attempt was blocked.
Defensively,
Rashad Williams (New Hope) led the Bobcats with nine tackles.
Josh Brown (Columbia) had six stops.
Zechariah Parodi (Scott Central) had five tackles, three tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries.
DK Jenkins (St. Martin) and
Tyrice Holloway (Bay Springs) each had five tackles.
Jeremiah Tatum (Columbia),
Dion Barber (Oak Grove) and
Chase Pinkston (Oak Grove) had pass interceptions.
The Bobcats end the season with a trip to Pearl River on Halloween night. It will be the 94th annual "Catfight" with Jones holding a 49-42-2 lead in the series.
Southwest hosts East Central on Thursday in its final game of the year.
