King's four goals help No. 7 Bobcats get back on track

MERIDIAN Sherline King did not have a hat-trick going into Tuesday night's match despite leading the conference in goals.

That all changed in a 4-2 Bobcat win, with King netting a hat-trick in the first half and adding a fourth goal with 1:21 to play to put the icing on a 25th straight win over the Lady Eagles.

Jones improved to 9-3, 5-3 MACCC. Meridian fell to 8-5, 4-4.

King's 19 goals lead the MACCC and her 47 points rank her eighth in NJCAA Division II.

She scored in the 3rd, 12th and 42nd minutes to make it 3-0 at half.

Back-to-back goals for Lauren Smith in a 4:41 span pulled Meridian within 3-2 with just over 34 minutes to play.

Meridian, who had just one shot in the opening 45 minutes, fired off 11 in the second half and put constant pressure on the Bobcats.

Jones was able to hold off Meridian down the stretch and King's 89th minute goal, off a second Mary Grace Batson assist, pushed the final margin out to 4-2 Cats.

The Bobcats go to East Mississippi Oct. 22 and No. 12 Pearl River Oct. 25.
