ELLISVILLE – Twelfth-ranked Jones College jumped out to a 28-3 lead in the second quarter and went on to defeat No. 10 Copiah-Lincoln 42-32 here Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.
It was the sixth straight win over Co-Lin.
Jones improved to 2-1, 1-0 in the MACCC South Division. Co-Lin drops to 2-1 and 0-1.
The Bobcats scored on its opening drive of the game moving 55 yards in eight plays.
DJ Smith (Greenville Christian) scored on a 13-yard run and
Bart Edmiston Jr.'s (Ocean Springs) extra point made it 7-0 with 9:20 to play in the first quarter.
Co-Lin made it 7-3 when Brandon Gilliam kicked a 44-yard field goal with 4:01 to go in the opening quarter to end a 44-yard, six-play drive.
The Bobcats opened the second quarter with a 67-yard, two-play drive. Smith connected with
Justin Campbell (Johns Creek, Georgia) for a 55-yard touchdown pass. Edmiston's kick made it 14-3 with 14:04 on the clock.
Edmiston then converted an onside kick and the Bobcats recovered at the Co-Lin 47-yard line.
Two plays later, Smith found
Jerry Johnson Jr. (Pearl) for a 44-yard scoring pass. Edmiston's extra point made it 21-3 with 12:56 to play in the first half.
The Bobcats took advantage of a turnover to quickly increase the lead.
Defensive back
Tyreke Snow (Newton) forced a fumble and the Bobcats recovered at their own 47.
Eight plays later,
Trent Davis (Attalla, Alabama) scored on a 13-yard run and Edmiston's PAT made it 28-3 with 9:34 to play in the second quarter.
The Wolves answered with a 77-yard, six-play drive. Quarterback Devan Tott hit Dakota Thomas for a 26-yard touchdown pass and Gilliam's extra point made it 28-10 with 6:55 remaining in the first half.
Two possessions later, it was all
Trent Howell (George County) for the Bobcats. Jones started a drive at its own 35 and Howell picked up all 65 yards on three carries with the final rush being from 24 yards out for the touchdown. Edmiston's kick made it 35-10 with 2:06 to play in the first half.
Jones then forced a Co-Lin punt, but the ball hit a Bobcat defender and the Wolves recovered at the Bobcat 30.
Eight plays later, Tott scored on a 5-yard run and Gilliam's extra point made it 35-17 with 22 seconds left in the second quarter.
The Wolves then scored on its opening drive of the second half, marching 61 yards in nine plays. Gilliam converted a 34-yard field goal to make it 35-20 with 9:28 showing in the third quarter.
Jones took the ensuing kickoff and drove 82 yards in nine plays.
Zechariah Parodi (Scott Central), a 5-foot-11, 275-pound defensive lineman, took the snap out of the "Bobcat" formation on first and goal at the 1-yard line and plowed into the end zone for the touchdown. Edmiston's PAT gave the Bobcats a 42-20 lead with 5:03 left in the third quarter.
The Wolves cut the margin to 42-26 early in the fourth quarter when Tott completed a 4-yard scoring pass to O'Ryan James to end a 45-yard, seven-play drive. Tott was stopped on a rush for the two-point conversion and Jones led 42-26 with 14:20 to play.
Co-Lin would then drive 63 yards in 10 plays with Tott scoring on a 5-yard run. The pass for the two-point conversion was incomplete and the Bobcats were up 42-32 with 8:53 remaining.
Jones would then fumble on its next possession and the Wolves recovered at the Bobcat 22. The Bobcats would stop Co-Lin and force Gilliam to try a 28-yard field goal.
But
Cedrick Beavers (Taylorsville) blocked the kick and the Bobcats took over on their own 23 with 5:21 to play.
The Wolves forced a punt and took over on their own 30 with 3:20 left.
D.J. Cloyd (Columbia) then sealed the game with a pass interception that he returned 36 yards to the Co-Lin 24 with 2:31 left.
Individually, Howell rushed 17 times for 126 yards and a touchdown. Smith completed 10-of-14 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Davis had three catches for 47 yards, Campbell had one catch for 55 yards and a touchdown and Johnson had one reception for 41 yards and a score.
Parodi had five tackles, two tackles for loss, nine yards rushing on three carries and scored a touchdown.
Snow had eight tackles and a forced fumble and
Daishun Scott (Greenville Christian) had seven tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
Quintin Sterling (Oak Grove) had five tackles, Cloyd had four tackles and a pass interception and
Dontavious Howard (Oak Grove) had four tackles.
Jadan Aubert (Vacherie, Louisiana) had 1.5 TFLs and 0.5 sacks,
Jamon Smith (Clay-Chalkville, Alabama) and
Mason Jenkins (West Jones) each had 1.0 TFLs,
CJ Buckhalter (Presbyterian Christian) and
Kennon Loftin (West Jones) each had 0.5 TFLs.
Edmiston averaged 48.3 yards on four punts.
Jones had 23 first downs, 248 yards rushing, 206 yards passing and 454 yards of offense. Co-Lin had 20 first downs, 128 yards rushing, 221 yards passing and 349 yards of offense.
The Bobcats had five turnovers, compared to two for the Wolves.
Jones travels to East Central for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 28. Co-Lin host Southwest on Sept. 28.
