SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Lauren Lindsey hit solo home runs in the first and sixth and five other Bobcats had multiple hits as No. 5 Jones outlasted No. 3 South Mountain (Arizona) 8-6 on Day 2 of the NJCAA Division II World Series.
Jones improved to 48-8 overall and 2-0 in the tournament. The Cougars fell to 53-9 and will have to play an elimination game later this evening against Lansing (Michigan).
The teams slugged a combined five home runs, with Lindsey's two-out shot to left in the first getting the scoring started.
Sarah Potter homered to left in the second to tie the game at 1-1.
Nia Luckett doubled and scored in the third and
Gabby Hoffman added an RBI-single to make it 3-1 before an Iliana Munoz homer pulled the Cougars within one.
Carly Lewis continued her tear at the plate with a two-run double in the fourth but she was answered with a two-run double by Halle Hogan to once again make it a one-run game at 5-4.
A three-run sixth gave the Bobcats some breathing room.
Elise Jackson singled, stole second and third and scored on a fielder's choice. Lindsey homered and
Kathryn Smith singled to give Jones its largest lead at 8-4.
The insurance runs proved to be big as single runs over the sixth and seventh for South Mountain pulled the final within 8-6.
Lewis had three of Jones' 14 hits. Luckett,
Aaliyah Dixon, Lindsey and Jackson all had multiple hits.
Holly Craft went the distance in the circle to improve to 18-2. She allowed six runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Jones will face second-ranked Louisburg (North Carolina) at 11 a.m. Thursday.
