Bobcats pick up impressive road sweep over Northwest

SENATOBIA – No. 8 Jones College posted an impressive sweep over Northwest here Sunday afternoon at Jim Miles Field.
 
In the opener, Beau Bryans (Madison Central) drove in five runs and Jakob Wax (Prairieville, Louisiana) had four hits and the Bobcats defeated the Rangers, 11-3. In game two, Jones used an eight-run second inning to gain the sweep, 12-6.
 
Jones, 29-7 overall and 14-2 in the MACCC, will host East Central in a big conference showdown at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The Warriors are tied with Jones first place in the conference.
 
Northwest, 22-14 and 10-6, hosts Jackson St. (Tennessee) Monday and visits Northeast Wednesday.
 
Jones 11, Northwest 3
 
Jones took a 2-0 lead in the first when Peyton Bell (Mobile, Alabama) scored on a balk and Bryans drove in Marquette Gibson (D'Iberville) with a sacrifice fly to center. Chase Honeycutt's (DeSoto Central) double to right-center scored Wax in the second to make it 3-0.
 
Wax hit a solo home run to left to make 4-1 in the sixth. Bryans had an RBI single and Wax had a two-run double in the seventh.
 
In the eighth, Bell scored on a wild pitch and Bryans hit a three-run home run to end the scoring.
 
Colby Tubre (D'Iberville) got the win by going 5.0 innings, allowing an unearned run, three hits, three walks and two strikeouts. He is now 4-1 on the year. Kace Matthews (West Jones), Bryans and Tate Duncan (Columbia Academy) also pitched.
 
Wax homered, doubled, singled twice and had three RBIs. Bryans homered and singled and Honeycutt had two doubles. Josh Cary (Petal) had two singles with Bell and Gatlin Sanders (Madison Central).
 
Eli Selby had three RBIs for Northwest. 
 
Starter Brooks Rice went 6.1 innings, allowed six runs, seven hits and took the loss.

Tristan Pearson (Biloxi) singled in Gibson in the first inning to give Jones a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bobcats then sent 14 batters to the plate in the second and took a 9-0 lead. Sanders had a two-run double in the inning with Pearson getting an RBI single. Jones also scored runs with two bases-loaded walks and a hit-by-pitch with the bases load. A wild pitch allowed another run to score.
 
Trailing 10-2, the Rangers scored four runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 10-6. 
 
Honeycutt had an RBI single in the fifth and another run scored on an error.
 
Starter Brice Deaton (Pontotoc) went 3.1 innings, allowed six runs (five earned), five hits, walked two and struck out six. Charlee Strickland (Northeast Jones) got the win in relief, tossing 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, no runs and notching three strikeouts. He is now 4-1 on the year. Eli Walker (Gulfport) and Luke Lycette (Northwest Rankin) each tossed an inning of hitless baseball.
 
Sanders doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs. Pearson and Honeycutt both had two singles and two RBIs. Gibson added a single.
 
Dawson Griffin belted a grand slam for Northwest in the fourth. 
 
Starter Logan Eldridge lasted just 1.2 innings and got the loss. He gave up nine runs (three earned), five hits, walked four and struck out four.
