Jones earns split at Northeast behind 17-run game two

BOONEVILLE – Jones was stymied by Northeast's Davis Oswalt in the opener but rebounded in emphatic fashion with a 17-run game two to split a doubleheader with the Tigers Saturday afternoon.

Jones moved to 30-10, 15-5 in the MACCC and sits in a four-way tie for second. Northeast moved to 24-16, 11-7 in conference play.

The Bobcats host No. 5 Meridian on Tuesday.

Northeast 10, Jones 0 (7 inn.)

Oswalt scattered seven hits, four strikeouts and three walks over 6.2 to lead the Tigers on the mound in a run-rule win.

Jackson Owen's two-run double in the third started the scoring for the Tigers and they'd plate four in the inning to take a 4-0 cushion.

Northeast added two in the fourth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh, walking it off on an outfield error.

The Tigers pounded out 12 hits, with seven different guys picking up at least one.

Gatlin Sanders and Beau Bryans had two hits apiece for the Bobcats.

Colby Tubre (4-2) allowed six runs in 3.1. Tate Duncan tossed two relief innings and Blake Summerlin two-thirds of an inning.

Jones 17, Northeast 6

Sanders' two-run double to center was part of a four-run first and Jones never trailed after exploding for 17 runs for a game two win and split.

Leading 4-2 after two, Sanders' leadoff double helped jumpstart a five-run frame and extend the lead to 9-2. Luke Lycette had an infield RBI-single, Chase Honeycutt a two-run single, Peyton Bell a bases-loaded walk and Tristan Pearson a sac fly.

Sanders homered with two outs in the fifth to make it 12-3 Bobcats.

Jones tacked on four more in the sixth on a Josh Cary RBI-single, Pearson two-run single and Sanders RBI-single.

Seven Bobcats combined for the 11 hits, with Sanders going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs.

Brice Deaton (5-1) worked six innings allowed five runs with five strikeouts.
