Jones has season-long win streak snapped in split at Smith-Wills

JACKSON – Francisco Elvira tossed 3.1 one-hit innings in relief to help Jones knock off Mississippi Delta, 8-5, before an 11-4 setback to Itawamba snapped the Bobcats' season-long 12-game winning streak.

Jones closed out non-conference play 15-5 and will open MACCC competition Saturday at Holmes.

Jones 8, MDCC 5

Jakob Wax homered for the fourth time in four games, Marquette Gibson was 3-for-3 and Elvira kept the Trojans in check the final three plus innings to close out an 8-5 matinee win.

The Bobcats led 5-0 in the top of the third before MDCC clawed back with four runs in the bottom half to make it 5-4.

A single run in the fifth and two more on a Gibson RBI-double and Gatlin Sanders groundout in the sixth stretched it back to 8-4 Bobcats.

Wax, Josh Cary and Gibson had multiple hits. Wax homered and tripled.

Dalton Tanner scattered seven hits and one earned run over 3.2 innings. Elvira allowed one hit and one unearned run.

Itawamba 11, Jones 4

A series of miscues in the top of the first allowed ICC to take a 4-0 lead after its opening at-bat and they never trailed.

Two RBI-singles, two wild pitches, a hit-by-pitch and passed ball plated the four Indian runs.

Jones cut the lead in half in the fourth, using a leadoff walk to get the inning going. A bases-loaded walk to Cary and Gibson RBI-single made it 4-2.

ICC got both runs back in the fifth on a sac fly and RBI-single from Will Verdung and Gray Bane.

After a pair of leadoff lineouts in the bottom of the sixth, JC strung together a two-out rally on a Sanders infield single, Beau Bryans double and Peyton Bell single to get within 6-4. They would leave the bases loaded.

A five-run top of the seventh put things out of reach, all started with back-to-back walks to start the frame.

Drew Druckenmiller (0-1) scattered seven hits, three earned runs, four strikeouts and a walk in his first decision of the year. Connor Brooks, Tate Duncan and Bryans combined for the final six outs.

Bell was 3-for-3 in a 10-hit game for Jones.
