Jones remains unbeaten at home with MACCC sweep of Holmes

ELLISVILLE – Carly Lewis drove in seven runs and Bobcat pitching combined to punch out 17 Bulldogs on the afternoon as No. 5 Jones swept Holmes to open conference play Monday at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.

Jones improved to 17-4 overall, 2-0 in the MACCC, while Holmes dropped to 11-9, 0-2.

Weather permitting, the Bobcats travel to Hinds Wednesday and will host East Mississippi Saturday to close out a busy week.

Jones 9, Holmes 3

Hanna Zeitz tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts and the Bobcats took advantage of 11 walks and five Bulldog errors to win the opener.

Lewis' RBI-single in the first gave Jones the lead for good and she would add a two-run single in the fifth to extend the Bobcat lead to 6-1.

Former Bobcat Maycee Knight's two-run homer in the sixth pulled Holmes within 6-3.

The fifth of five Bulldog errors, a bases-loaded walk to Lauren Lindsey and another Lewis RBI-single in Jones' half of the sixth made the final margin 9-3.

Lewis was 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Elise Jackson and Nia Luckett had two hits apiece.

Jones 9, Holmes 4

The Bobcats struck for five runs on just one hit in the third, coupled with a pair of Bulldog errors, and tacked on four more in the fourth to run away in game two.

Meg Gatlin's RBI-single and Lindsey's RBI-single was followed by a two-run homer from Lewis to make it 9-1 in the fourth.

Needing just one out for a run-rule in the fifth, Holmes benefited from a two-out infield error that kept the game alive and rallied for three in the inning to make it 9-4.

Holly Craft (7-1) scattered five hits, eight strikeouts and one earned run over five innings for the win. Luckett tossed the final two frames and didn't allow a hit.

Sadie Wells, Gabby Hoffman, Aaliyah Dixon and Kathryn Smith all added hits for Jones.
