Bobcats stun top-seeded Co-Lin, 71-56

WESSON – The season continues for the Jones College Bobcats.
 
The No. 8 seed Bobcats never trailed and stunned top-seeded Copiah-Lincoln 71-56 in the Region 23 Tournament quarterfinals here Wednesday night at Mullen Gymnasium. The Bobcat victory snapped an 11-game Co-Lin winning streak.
 
Head coach Newton Mealer's team (16-10) will now play East Mississippi at 5 p.m. Saturday at Mississippi College in the semifinals. The winner of that game will play at 5 p.m. Sunday vs. the Coahoma/Meridian winner for the region championship.
 
All five of Jones' starters scored in double figures.
 
A layup by Ashton Campbell capped a 16-4 run and gave the Bobcats a 21-8 lead with 11:17 to play in the opening half. Co-Lin fought back and pulled within 29-25 on two Jemario Hersey free throws with 5:07 remaining in the half.
 
Jones led 35-29 at halftime. 
 
The Bobcats opened the second half on a 14-5 run and took a 49-34 lead on a Treylan Smith layup with 15:12 left. A layup by Cowandric Samuel with 9:20 remaining cut the lead to 53-48, but that was as close as the Wolves would get.
 
A dunk by Smith gave the Bobcats its largest lead at 68-52 with 3:49 remaining.

Smith had a huge game for the Bobcats, scoring 21 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Caleb McGill had 17 points, four rebounds and four assists and Jay Barnes had 11 points, four rebounds and four assists. Campbell had 10 points and six rebounds and Daquarius Harris had 10 points, five rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.
 
Jones shot 45 percent against 32 percent for Co-Lin.
 
The Bobcats outscored the Wolves 42-32 on points in the paint and 15-8 on points off turnovers.
 
Co-Lin ends the season at 18-6.
