Pernell scores career-high 33 as Bobcats defeat Eagles, 85-66

ELLISVILLE Dimp Pernell scored 22 of his game-high 33 points in the second half to help the Jones College Bobcats to an 85-66 victory over Meridian here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
 
The Bobcats trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half before coming back to take a 35-33 lead at halftime. 
 
Jones was ahead 57-48 with 8:51 remaining when Eagle head coach James Green was hit with three technical fouls. 
 
Dimp Pernell, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard from Horn Lake, went to the line and hit all six foul shots. He then took a pass from Chaunterion Ward (Memphis) and made a layup to make it 65-48 to end a 14-0 run. 
 
After a Meridian basket, Dimp Pernell made a 3-pointer to put Jones up 68-50, which capped of string of 11 straight points by Dimp Pernell.
 
JC's biggest lead would be 85-64 with 24 seconds to play after a Malik Franklin (Vicksburg) free throw. 
 
In the first half, Calexis Campbell made a shot with 7:13 showing to give the Eagles its longest lead of the evening at 29-17. But the Bobcats closed the half on an 18-4 run and took the momentum.
 
After Dimp Pernell's effort, Ky Pernell (Horn Lake) added 16 points and LJ Hackman (Columbus) had 14. Trey Smith (Terry) had a huge double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. He also had a team-leading five assists. 
 
Campbell and Ricky Hinton had 16 points each for the Eagles and Chad Jones added 13.
 
Jones made 27-of-56 shots from the field for 48 percent, 2-of-10 3-pointers for 20 percent and 29-of-38 free throws for 76 percent. Meridian was 19-of-55 from the floor for 35 percent, 9-of-22 from 3-point range for 41 percent and 19-of-24 from the foul line for 79 percent.
 
The Bobcats held a 37-36 edge in rebounds and committed 11 turnovers compared to 18 for Meridian. 
 
Jones held a huge edge on points in the paints, 40-12, and points off turnovers, 23-8.
 
Jones, 9-3, will travel to East Mississippi for a 7:30 p.m. tip on Thursday. The Bobcats will not play again at home until Jan. 8 when they host Baton Rouge Community College.
 
Meridian, 7-3, visits Coahoma on Thursday.
