ELLISVILLE –
Jona Hennings made two, clutch saves in penalties but Jones hit the crossbar twice as No. 13 Pearl River outlasted the Bobcats 2-1 to advance to Sunday's region championship.
Jones was the better team for the full 110 minutes, holding the Wildcats to one shot on goal, but just could not capitalize on its opportunities.
Gemma Whitchurch had two good chances in the first 10 minutes for Jones, the first saved and the second sailing just high over the bar.
Another opportunity came up in the 13th minute when a corner kick found the head of a Wildcat defender and hit the post for a near own-goal.
Scoreless at the half, the Bobcats turned up the pressure even more the second half.
Hilary Jaén's header in the 73rd minute from point blank range fell right into the hands of the PRCC keeper and her shot from distance in the 85th minute was also saved.
Into a pair of 10-minute sudden death overtime periods, neither team really threatened to setup penalty kicks.
Jaén skied her attempt over the bar and both
Boo Mills and
Celine Ottah hit the bar as PRCC was able to advance, 2-1.
Jones outshot PRCC 13-2 for the match and won nine corners against none for the Wildcats.
Jones, ranked No. 1 in the final NJCAA poll, will await the announcement of an NJCAA Tournament at-large bid on Tuesday.
