Jones avenges lone loss, beats Holmes to advance to national title game

TUCSON, Ariz. – Jones will play for its first-ever NJCAA Division II Women's Soccer National Championship on Saturday.

The top-ranked Bobcats avenged their lone loss of the season to Holmes back on Oct. 24 with an emphatic 4-0 victory in Thursday's national championship semifinal.

Jones, 16-1-1, will meet Johnson County, 18-3-2, on Saturday at 1 o'clock in the first-ever meeting between the programs. It's the Lady Cavaliers' second national championship game appearance and first as a DII program.

Celine Ottah struck for her third goal of the tournament in the 29th minute to give Jones the lead, back heading in a free kick from Riley Davis.

Davis' corner kick in the 42nd minute was briefly punched away by the Bulldog keeper but Lauren Carothers was there to strike it in for a 2-0 lead.

Holmes' two chances in the second half were both denied by Jona Hennings.

Great work by Gemma Whitchurch setup Hilary Jaén for a goal in the 83rd minute to extend the lead to 3-0.

Davis then capped the scoring in the 84th minute when her corner kick was mishandled by the keeper and found the back of the net.

Jones outshot Holmes 7-3 on goal in the victory.

The Bobcats snapped a three-game losing streak to the Bulldogs and shut them out for the first time since 2015.
