Defense keys No. 9 Bobcats past Hinds, 21-3

ELLISVILLE – Ninth-ranked Jones College used a smothering defense to defeat Hinds 21-3 here Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.
 
Jones held Hinds to 112 yards of total offense, including a 31-yard run on a fake punt, and had 13 tackles for loss, including five sacks. The Eagles were 1-of-15 on third down conversions. It was the second week in a row for the Bobcats to hold their opponents without a touchdown.
 
Jones improves to 4-1 overall, 3-0 in the MACCC South Division. Hinds drops to 2-3 and 2-1.
 
The Bobcats scored on their second possession of the game. Jerry Johnson Jr. (Pearl) returned a Hinds punt 28 yards to the Eagle 19. Four plays later, Trent Davis scored on a 3-yard run and Bart Edmiston's extra point made it 7-0 with 8:38 to play in the first quarter.
 
The Eagles got their only points midway through the second quarter when Tanner Hollingsworth connected on a 30-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 7:16 remaining in the first half.
 
Jones answered quickly on the next drive when they went 80 yards in two plays. Brax Garrison hit Latrell Neville (New Orleans, Louisiana) for 12 yards and then found Justin Campbell for a 68-yard touchdown pass. Edmiston's PAT made it 14-3 with 6:38 showing in the second quarter.
 
The Bobcats added a score in the fourth quarter when they went 44 yards in just four plays. Houston Johnson scored on a 14-yard run and Edmiston's conversion ended the scoring with 7:10 left to play.

Linebacker JD Stewart (Greenville Christian) led the Bobcats with nine tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack. Linebacker Raymond Collins (Harrison Central) had six tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks. Lineman Kelten Mickell (Petal) had six tackles and half a sack. Defensive back Tyreke Snow (Newton) and linebacker Kennon Loftin (West Jones) had pass interceptions.
 
Offensively, Garrison (Tuscaloosa, Alabama) completed 15-of-23 passes for 188 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Johnson (Columbia) carried three times for 38 yards and a touchdown and had five catches for 25 yards. Running back Trent Davis (Attalla, Alabama) had 11 carries for 37 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Justin Campbell (Johns Creek, Georgia) had two catches for 82 yards and a score.
 
Punter Bart Edmiston Jr. (Ocean Springs) punted nine times for a 49.0 yard average, five of 50-plus and had three kicks inside the 20-yard line.
 
Jones continues division play next week when they go to Pearl River for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Oct. 12. It will be the 93rd Catfight with Jones holding the series lead, 48-42-2. The Bobcats have won six straight and 11 of the last 12 in the series.
 
Hinds hosts Southwest on Oct. 12.
