Bobcats snap losing streak with dominant performance

ELLISVILLE – Jones College had an impressive all-around performance in an 86-54 dismantling of Holmes here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
 
The victory snapped a three-game Bobcat losing streak and is its biggest win over Holmes in two decades. 
 
Jones is now 11-6 overall, 4-3 in the MACCC. Holmes falls to 10-6 and 2-4.
 
The Bobcats had a balanced attack with four players in double figures, led by Decorian Payton's (Center Hill) 14 points off the bench. Jay Barnes (Oak Grove) added 13 and Ashton Campbell (Forrest County AHS) and Treylan Smith (Petal) added 12 each. Caleb McGill (Petal) and Daquarius Harris (Memphis, Tennessee) chipped in eight points each.
 
Barnes dished out eight assists and McGill added six as the Bobcats had 22 assists on the evening. Harris had six rebounds with Payton and Smith each pulling down five boards.
 
The Bobcats shot the ball exceptionally well, making 36-of-61 attempts for 59 percent. They made 7-of-22 3-pointers for 32 percent, but only 7-of-15 free throws for 47 percent.
 
After Holmes scored the game's opening basket, Jones went on a 16-4 run to take command. A 3-pointer by Barnes gave the Bobcats a 16-6 lead with 14:39 left in the opening half. 
 
Jones went up 47-22 with 42 seconds showing when Jordan Hibbler (Southaven) made a layup. Michael Whitmore hit a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs at the buzzer to make it 47-25 at halftime. 
 
A Smith layup with 9:20 remaining gave the Bobcats a 68-39 lead. JC's largest lead would be 84-50 on a Chaunterion Ward (Memphis, Tennessee) jumper with 1:18 to play.
 
The Bobcats dominated inside, outscoring Holmes 52-26 on points in the paint. The Jones' bench outscored Holmes, 33-13.
 
Raymond Adams had 16 points to lead the Bulldogs.
 
Holmes made only 21-of-62 shots for 34 percent, 3-of-9 from beyond the arc for 33 percent and 9-of-14 free throws for 64 percent.
 
The Bulldogs outrebounded Jones, 39-37.
 
The Bobcats will visit Mississippi Delta at 6 p.m. on Feb. 2.  
 
Holmes will host Mississippi Delta on Jan. 30.
