RIDGELAND – Brianna Lopez scored from just outside the box in the first overtime period to lift No. 4 Holmes over No. 5 Jones on Tuesday afternoon on the Holmes-Ridgeland campus.
Holmes improved to 9-0, 4-0 in the MACCC, while Jones suffered its first loss to fall to 5-1-1 and 2-1-1 in league play. The loss also snapped a 22-match unbeaten streak for the Bobcats in conference play.
Locked in a scoreless draw through 90 minutes, Lopez's game-winner came with 21 seconds left in the first overtime period.
Poppy Binding appeared to score the go-ahead goal for Jones with around 13 minutes to play in regulation, but an extremely late flag for offsides was called - despite being a foot onsides - and took the goal off the board.
Makenna Yarrow had five saves and two Holmes keepers combined for six.
The final shot tally was 11-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Jones returns home on Friday to host No. 16 East Central at 5 o'clock.
