MERIDIAN – Sixth-ranked Wallace State (Alabama) downed No. 14 Jones College 6-3 here Saturday at Northeast Park Tennis Center.
The Bobcats are now 21-3 on the season.
Jones plays a 1 p.m. match on Tuesday at Marion Military Institute and they end the regular season with a 12:30 p.m. Wednesday home match vs. Southwest.
Wallace State meets Montevallo on Friday.
There were several close matches on the day and the Bobcats came up just short against the Lions.
Tanner Bevard (Sacred Heart) and
Jackson Peoples (Northwest Rankin) beat Marco Kalbermatten and Tristian Du Plessis in No. 3 doubles, 9-7.
Tomi Nader (Argentina) and
Wallace Brewer (Germantown) fell 6-8 to Ryan Wang and Muntingh Hamman in No. 1 doubles.
Nacho Vanecek (Argentina) and
John Jabour (Warren Central) lost 5-8 in No. 2 doubles to Sebastian Gamez and Massimo Caliendo. In an extra match,
Trey Hilton (Pearl) and
Prescott Schaumberg (Indianola Academy) beat Alex Rainer and Ethan Howard, 8-6.
Vanecek rallied past Caliendo in No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 and Hilton defeated Kalbermatten in No. 6 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (6). Nader lost 2-6, 1-6 in No. 1 singles to Wang and Brewer dropped a 3-6, 3-6 decision to Gamez in No. 2 singles. Bevard fell to Du Plessis in No. 4 singles, 0-6, 1-6 and Peoples lost to Hamman in No. 5 singles, 6-1, 3-6, 4-10.
In extra matches, Jabour beat Leo Dos Santos, 6-3, 6-1; Schaumberg lost to Rainer, 3-6, 1-6 and
Tahir El-Zare (Hattiesburg) lost to Hutson Harden, 4-8.
