PERKINSTON – The 14th-ranked Jones College Bobcats made history Friday afternoon.
Jones captured its first MACCC championship since 1985 with an exciting 5-4 victory over No. 15 Mississippi Gulf Coast here at the MGCCC Tennis Complex.
By winning the championship, Jones earns the host role for the Region 23 Tournament April 21-23.
The Bobcats are now 21-2 overall and 17-0 in the MACCC.
The Bobcats trailed 2-1 after doubles, but rallied to win four singles' matches to claim the victory.
Tomi Nader (Argentina) and
Wallace Brewer (Germantown) defeated Pedro Molero and Clay Fudge in No. 1 doubles, 8-4.
Nacho Vanecek (Argentina) and
Trey Hilton (Pearl) lost 5-8 in No. 2 doubles to Paul Gayk and Anderson Dulaney.
Tanner Bevard (Sacred Heart) and
Jackson Peoples (Northwest Rankin) fell 4-8 in No. 3 doubles to Kyle Bond and Alex King.
Brewer edged Fudge in No. 2 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. Vanecek nipped Molero in No. 3 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 and Peoples outlasted Bond in No. 5 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 10-1. Hilton downed King in No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Gayk downed Nader in No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-3 and Dulaney defeated Bevard in No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Jones meets No. 6 Wallace St. (Alabama) at 10 a.m. Saturday in Meridian. Jones ends conference play with a 12:30 p.m. home match on Wednesday vs. Southwest.
Gulf Coast, 17-2 overall and 15-2 in the MACCC, ends its regular season at Southwest on Tuesday.
