Down goes No. 1: Bobcats sweep Itawamba in MACCC openers

ELLISVILLE– Behind a three-hit shutout from Nia Luckett in the opener and go-ahead, three-run home run from Aaliyah Dixon in the nightcap, No. 5 Jones swept No. 1 Itawamba by 1-0 and 6-2 finals Friday at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.

Jones extended its winning streak to nine games in improving to 13-4 overall. They've also won five consecutive against Itawamba, who dropped their first games to fall to 12-2.

The Bobcats host No. 6 Kirkwood and Northwest Florida State in a Sunday three-way at The Bank. All games will be carried on JCJC.TV.

Jones 1, Itawamba 0

There was no shortage of drama and controversy in the first game of the day, with a series of calls going in favor of Jones. A pair of plays where Indian runners left early and an interference call held Itawamba off the scoreboard.

Luckett and ICC's Madison Jenkins dueled head-to-head for six innings, combining for nine strikeouts, two walks and no runs allowed.

Scoreless into the seventh, the Indians made a pitching change to start the inning. That would prove costly for the visitors.

Taylor Duncan drew a hit-by-pitch to start the bottom half, followed by a walk, wild pitch and intentional walk to load the bases with no outs. Sarah Ballard then drew a walk-off walk, after fouling off numerous pitches, to give Jones a 1-0 win.

Jones 6, Itawamba 2

Tied at 2-2 headed to the bottom of the fourth, Jones scored four runs with two outs, highlighted by Dixon's blast, to earn the two-game sweep.

Ballard's RBI-single scored Duncan to give JC a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.

Holly Craft tossed a complete game, scattering six hits, two runs and seven strikeouts.

Ka'Mya Hampton allowed her first earned runs of the season for ICC as she fell to 6-1.
