TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Southern Miss transfer
Billy Garrity homered for Jones' first run of the season and hit an RBI-single in game two to help the Bobcats split at No. 11 Shelton State on opening day at Martin Field.
Shelton State scored in each of the first five innings to take a commanding lead in the opener, getting a four-hit game from Drake Logan.
Garrity homered to center to tie the game at 1-1 in the second before Logan's bases-clearing double put the Bucs on top for good.
Murray Hutchinson scored on a passed ball in the third and had an RBI-groundout to make it 8-3 in the fifth.
Colson Harris finished with two of the Bobcats' eight hits, doubling twice.
Dalton Tanner was roughed up in his first collegiate start, allowing five runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss.
Joshua Sullivan tossed three solid innings and
Blake Summerlin tossed a shutout eighth.
Scoreless into the third in game two, Hutchinson scored on a passed ball to give Jones the 1-0 lead only to see a bases-loaded walk in the bottom half tie the game.
That's the lone run Bobcat pitching would allow in the nightcap, with
Kade Keeton going four strong innings in a no-decision and
Drew Druckenmiller getting the win in three relief innings, allowing no runs on one hit with six punchouts.
Garrity singled to make it 2-1 in the sixth and Jones scored three times in the seventh on RBIs from Huthinson,
Josh Cary and
Tyler Ducksworth.
Sunday's doubleheader at MGM Park in Biloxi has been postponed due to construction at the park. Jones returns to action Feb. 15 against Coastal Alabama-East to open an eight-game homestand.
