Jones advances in region tournament with big win over Jaguars

ELLISVILLE – Jones College scored the game's first 14 points and never looked back in whipping Southern University-Shreveport (Louisiana) here Monday night in the second round of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.
 
The Bobcats, 17-7, will travel to Meridian for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday in the quarterfinals. The Eagles eliminated Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) 62-48 on Monday. The winners on Tuesday will go to the region semifinals Friday at Mississippi College.
 
Jones placed five players in double figures, led by 26 points from Calvin Temple (Center Hill). He also had five assists. Ashton Campbell (Forrest County AHS) had 19 points and seven assists and Caleb McGill (Petal) had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Jabari Bowman (Warren Central) had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Decorian Payton (Center Hill) had 14 points. 
 
McGill's dunk gave the Bobcats a 14-0 lead with 15:22 left in the opening half. Cowandric Samuel's (Jackson Callaway) layup with 9:47 showing gave Jones its largest lead of the opening half at 29-7.
 
The Jaguars fought back and got within 37-31 with 1:29 showing on a Kashie Natt layup. But Jones scored the half's final eight points and took a 45-31 halftime lead.
 
The Jaguars got as close as 49-42 with 17:06 remaining on a Natt layup. Leading 68-57 midway through the second half, the Bobcats went on another 8-0 run and went ahead 76-57 on a Campbell 3-pointer with 8:38 to play.
 
Jones used a 10-0 spurt to take its longest lead of the evening at 97-68 when Chris Lewis (Meridian) made a layup with 1:02 to play.
 
Nash paced the Jaguars with 18 points and 14 rebounds. DeVonte Snow had 15 points and six assists, Brandon Holt had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Jaiden Hare also had 10 points. Deonte Edwards had 13 rebounds to go with nine points. 
 
The Bobcats shot the ball well, connecting on 40-of-71 shots for 56 percent. They hit 7-of-16 3-pointers for 44 percent and made 10-of-14 free throws for 71 percent. Southern-Shreveport made 30-of-84 shots for 36 percent, 5-of-24 3-pointers for 21 percent and 5-of-11 free throws for 46 percent.
 
The Jaguars outrebounded Jones, 46-44, and the Bobcats had 26 assists compared to 13 for SUS. 
 
The Bobcats outscored the Jaguars 58-44 on points in the paint. 
 
Southern-Shreveport ends the season at 8-14.
