Hinds bests Bobcats in overtime, MACCC Tournament spot in limbo

UTICA – The homestanding Hinds Bulldogs hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds left to send the game to overtime where they would jump out to an eight-point lead and eventually hold on to beat Jones, 93-90, Monday night at J.D. Boyd Gymnasium.

Jones (15-6) missed the back-end of a two-shot foul that would've put them up by four late in regulation and Hinds immediately tied the game at 79-all when Deandre Buggage hit a 27-footer.

With 21 seconds left and a chance to win it in regulation, Jones dribbled out the clock and then lost the ball on a three-point attempt to go to extra time.

In overtime, Hinds (9-13) scored the first eight points to go up 87-79 as Buggage and Jalen Myers took over for the Bulldogs.

Ashton Campbell hit four free throws and Calvin Temple scored five points to help Jones rally back to tie the game at 89-all with just over 30 seconds left in overtime.

After a tough layup from Brodrick Thompson Jr. put Hinds back on top 91-89, Decorian Payton missed the back-end of a two shot foul that would've tied the game. Jalen Myers iced it with two free throws.

Six Bobcats finished in double figures despite Jones shooting just 37 percent on the night, their third-worst shooting performance of the year. Hinds shot a sizzling 58 percent.

Temple had 19 points, Campbell 17, Caleb McGill 12, Cowandric Samuel 11 and both Jabari Bowman and Payton with 10 apiece. Bowman added 13 boards for another double-double.

Myers led Hinds with 20 points, 22 rebounds and 10 assists.

Jones hosts Itawamba in the regular season finale on Thursday night on JCJC.TV, needing a win to stay alive for the eighth and final MACCC Tournament spot.
