WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – It wasn't pretty down the stretch with Jones losing a 13-point lead and it took overtime, but the Bobcats picked up a gritty, 74-71 win at ASU Mid-South Tuesday night to sweep the season series over the Greyhounds.
Jones closed out its non-conference slate 7-3 and heads into the winter break with good momentum. ASU-MS fell to 9-4.
The Bobcats scored the game's first seven points and led by as many as a dozen in the half.
An unexpected spark from
Samarion Grant, who scored eight first-half points off the bench, and seven from
Decorian Payton helped Jones take a 41-31 lead at the break.
The lead grew to 13 in the second half.
Leading 60-48 with 8:05 to play, the Greyhounds began their comeback effort.
Jones was held to one field goal to close out regulation as ASU-MS outscored the Bobcats 16-4 to force overtime.
Daquarius Harris, who had a game-high 18 points, seven boards and five blocks, was whistled for back-to-back goaltending calls - one on the offensive end and one on the defensive end - as the game went to extra time.
In the extra period,
Zandon Haralson's only field goal of the game was a big one, with the Northwest Mississippi transfer draining a three-pointer to give Jones a four-point lead.
The Bobcats were able to hold on from there, despite a last-second three-pointer from the Greyhounds that rimmed in-and-out that would've forced double overtime.
Behind Harris' 18,
Chaunterion Ward made good of his second straight start with eight points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Payton added 11 and four other Bobcats had eight.
Jailen Anderson led five Greyhounds in double figures with 15.
Jones returns to action Jan. 5 at home against Meridian to open MACCC play.
