Late surge lifts Bears past Bobcats, 66-56

ELLISVILLE – Southwest outscored Jones College 15-5 over the final 6:45 of the game and defeated the Bobcats 66-56 here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
 
Trailing 51-43, the Bobcats went on an 8-0 run and tied the game at 51-51 on an Ashton Campbell (Forrest County AHS) layup with 7:10 to play.
 
But Mark Drone would get a steal, a layup and convert the 3-point play to put Southwest up for good at 54-51. The Bobcats would make only one more field goal the rest of the way with Campbell getting another layup with 41 seconds to play to cut the Southwest lead to 64-56.
 
In the first half, the Bobcats took its longest lead of the night when Kam Carter (New Albany) made a 3-pointer to make it 18-13 with 11:37 remaining. But Southwest outscored Jones the rest of the half 18-6 to take a 31-24 halftime lead.
 
Jones struggled shooting the basketball all night, making just 22-of-66 from the floor for 33 percent. The Bobcats made only 1-of-9 three-point attempts and were only 11-of-22 from the free throw line.
 
Decorian Payton (Center Hill) came off the bench to lead Jones with 13 points. Campbell and Jay Barnes (Oak Grove) each had 12 points. Caleb McGill (Petal) had nine rebounds with Daquarius Harris (Memphis, Tennessee) getting eight rebounds and Payton adding seven boards. Jones outrebounded Southwest, 42-40.
 
Deon Brown led the Bears with 14 points with Jahshawne Joseph scoring 13 and Drone and Joe Holloway adding 11 each. 
 
Southwest made 25-of-54 shots for 46 percent and connected on 8-of-18 three-pointers.
 
The Bobcats (5-3) will host No. 25 East Mississippi at 6 p.m. on Dec. 8.
 
Southwest (6-3) entertains East Central Dec. 3.
