ELLISVILLE – Third-ranked Trinity Valley got a turnover with 10 seconds left and hit a buzzer-beater to force overtime where they would lead wire-to-wire and defeat No. 7 Jones 86-78 Saturday afternoon at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
TVCC improved to 2-0 while Jones fell to 1-1.
Jones got the opening basket of the game, but the Cardinals would score the next 10 to lead 18-12 after a quarter.
Carly Keats hit a 20-footer just before the halftime horn to pull Jones within 29-28 at the break. TVCC led 51-47 after three.
The Bobcats led by as many as five, 61-56, with 4:52 left, but TVCC would rally to force overtime.
Jones was leading 70-68 with 10 seconds left and the ball, but turned it over. TVCC would hit a 12-foot jumper at the buzzer to force overtime.
In the extra period, the Cardinals never trailed.
Meloney Thames scored a career-high 35 for Jones on 12-of-22 field goals, followed by
Arianna Patton with 13 and
Sakyia White with 12 points and 21 boards.
Jones hosts No. 2 Shelton State (1-2) on Thursday at 5 o'clock.
