TUCSON, Ariz. – For the second time in three seasons competing in NJCAA Division II, Jones College is headed to the national semifinals.
Jones upset No. 1-ranked Heartland, 2-1, to win Pool C and will face conference foe Holmes on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Kino Sports Complex.
The winner will advance to Saturday's national championship game.
"We knew Heartland was a great team and we would have to be on our A game to beat them," head coach
Dolores Deasley said. "The girls stuck to the game plan and executed it perfectly. I was extremely proud of the performance and everyone played a good game."
Leahmae Keogh found a wide-open
Kirsty Cameron at the top of the box in the 12th minute and Cameron struck it lower right corner for the 1-0 lead.
Cameron returned the favor in the 35th minute, flicking a ball behind the defense that Keogh drilled far corner to give Jones a 2-0 lead into the break.
Heartland's lone goal came off a penalty kick in the 89th minute after a handball in the box.
Makenna Yarrow faced just one shot on goal in 70 minutes of action to improve to 7-2-1 this season.
Danae Fowler played the final 20.
The final shot tally was 7-5 in favor of Jones.
Looking ahead to Friday's semifinal against Holmes, Deasley knows it's another tough task.
"They will be another tough team to break down, but the girls are focused and ready to play again. We keep going. One game at a time."
