TUCSON, Ariz. – Holmes' Callie McKinney scored 1:19 into the second overtime period to lift the Bulldogs over Jones, 2-1, in Friday's NJCAA National Semifinal match.
Jones dominated in all facets of the match except for on the scoreboard. And they had plenty of opportunities.
The Bobcats end their national championship run and season at 13-3-2. Holmes improved to 18-1-3 and will face Phoenix for the national title on Saturday.
Leahmae Keogh was poised to put Jones on top in the 36th minute, but Jordan Bertschler made a really good save from short range.
Just over a minute later, with Holmes trying to clear the ball near the top of the box,
Sydney Johnson had it fall at her feet and she drilled it home for the 1-0 lead.
A foul called on Jones just outside the box in the 43rd minute allowed the Bulldogs a chance to tie on a free kick. Holmes drew up a perfect set piece that touched two other Bulldogs before Tailynn Remmel tied the match at 1-1.
Keogh had two more great looks in the 68th and 75th minutes, the first saved and the second banging off the crossbar.
The teams then went to overtime for a second straight meeting.
In the 99th minute,
Caragan Childs' cross fell at the feet of a streaking
Kirsty Cameron who sailed it high over the bar from right in front of the net.
Holmes' game-winner then came 2:19 later after a turnover at midfield. An errant pass found Jaelyn Hanson who dribbled and then hit McKinney down the middle of the field who scored from 10 yards out.
The Bulldogs managed three shots on goal all match, two of them finding the back of the net.
