Bobcats suffer first setback of the season in road loss to Northwest

SENATOBIA – The Jones College men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday night, falling at Northwest 87-83, despite four Bobcats in double figures.

Jones, ranked 10th in the latest NJCAA poll, fell to 10-1 overall, 2-1 in the MACCC. The Rangers improved to 9-2, 2-1.

Northwest scored the game's first six points and took its largest lead, 24-14, with 10:54 to play in the first half.

Ashton Campbell had 21 of his team-high 26 points the opening 20 minutes, hitting back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to end the half to give Jones a 47-41 lead.

A 17-6 spurt to start the second half gave the Bobcats their largest lead at 64-50.

But Ethan Pickett, one of three Rangers to score 20-plus on the night, scored nine of the next 11 points for Northwest to cut the Bobcat lead to just six.

With the Bobcats later trailing 74-73, two fouls within six seconds sent Campbell to the bench with five fouls with 5:58 left. Two minutes earlier, Jabari Bowman fouled out.

Down 82-77 with 1:55 to play, a pair of free throws by Lovell Smith and Calvin Temple pulled Jones within one and then Decorian Payton put the Bobcats ahead 83-82 with 24 seconds left.

The lead was short-lived, three seconds to be exact. After the make, Joseph Cooper pulled up from beyond the arc and swished in a three to put Northwest ahead for good.

Temple missed the game-tying layup on the ensuing possession.

The Rangers shot 47 percent on the night against 40 percent for Jones.

Behind Campbell's 26, Payton finished with 18-16, Temple had 18 and Caleb McGill added 11.

Jones returns home on Monday to host a good Southwest squad. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
