MERIDIAN – Bobcat head coach
Brendan Connolly told his team postgame that this was their most complete and impressive win of the season. That would be hard to argue.
Fifth-ranked Jones jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 19 minutes and added a pair of goals late to knock off No. 19 Meridian, 5-2, on a wet and rainy night on the Eagles' home turf.
Jones improved to 5-1, 2-1 in the division while Meridian fell to 4-3, 1-3 in the south. The Bobcats have won 16 of the last 17 meetings between the teams.
Leighton Jameson connected with
Yussef Hakmaoui on back-to-back goals in the 8th and 11th minutes to give JC a 2-0 lead.
Elean Fajardo extended the Bobcat lead to 3-0 in the 19th minute, scoring less than a minute after checking into the contest.
Felipe Pansica put Meridian on the board just before half on a penalty kick.
The Eagles got within 3-2 just 3:38 into the second half when Wesley Purvis found Zach Walker up the right sideline.
But that's as close as Meridian would get as Fajardo and
Andrew Craig added goals in less than a three-minute span to put the match away.
Jones out-shot Meridian 16-9. The teams combined for 28 fouls and three cautions.
Garrett Wise had a career-high five saves in the win.
Jones returns home Friday to host Copiah-Lincoln at 7 p.m. They travel to Hinds Sept. 28 and face St. Louis (in Memphis) on Oct. 2.
