Luckett tosses two-hit gem, Jones advances in winners bracket

OXFORD, Ala. – Nia Luckett tossed a complete-game two-hitter and the top of the Bobcat lineup was 6-for-9 with three RBIs as No. 2 Jones defeated No. 9 Gulf Coast 4-1 to advance in the NJCAA Division II Tournament winners bracket.

Jones won its third straight postseason game against the rival Bulldogs to improve to 45-7. Gulf Coast will play Murray State College in an elimination game later tonight.

The Bobcats, winners of 23 consecutive games, will meet No. 3 Louisburg College, winners of 35 in a row, at noon on Thursday with a trip to the semifinals at stake.

All games will be played at Choccolocco Park's Signature Field the next three days with only eight teams remaining.

Jones took a 1-0 lead after one, using a leadoff walk drawn by Tyesha Cole and scoring her on Lauren Lindsey's RBI-single.

Gulf Coast (35-15) knotted the game at 1-1 in the second. K.K. Agner reached on a fielding error that allowed Rakeya Travis to score on an infield groundout.

The Bobcats took advantage of an error by the Bulldogs in the third to retake the lead, 2-1.

Luckett continued to cruise in the circle and retired 12 of the last 13 Bulldogs to end the game.

Cole's RBI-triple in the seventh scored Luckett and Kristian Edwards hit a sac fly to plate two, big insurance runs in the seventh.

Jones out-hit Gulf Coast 8-2. Six of the eight hits came from the top three hitters in the lineup.

Luckett improved to 16-4, scattering two hits, one unearned run, six strikeouts and one walk in a complete game performance.
