CLINTON – No. 1 Jones held Coahoma to 21 percent shooting on the night, built a 42-18 lead at the half and ran away with its fifth consecutive NJCAA Region 23 Championship in an 80-46 rout Friday at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
The Bobcats' perfect season is still intact, as they improved to 20-0 with their 23rd consecutive victory. Coahoma, winners of 13 straight, ended its season at 14-3.
Jones will now head to Lubbock, Texas, April 19-24 for the NJCAA Division I Basketball Tournament. They will learn their seeding and matchup on Sunday's NJCAA Selection Show at 4:30 p.m.
Daisha Bradford (Mobile, Alabama) had a double-double for the Bobcats, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
JaKayla Johnson (Clinton) led Jones with 19 points and
Lekera Hughes (Oak Grove) added 14 points. Hughes and
Kyjai Miles (Dallas, Texas) both had eight rebounds. Johnson handed out seven assists and Bradford had six.
Mary Wilkins and Braylin Tate each had 16 points to lead Coahoma.
Coahoma led 10-9 midway through the first quarter. But Jones took command with a 21-2 run over the next eight minutes and took a 30-12 lead with 6:55 remaining in the first half when Bradford made a layup off a Johnson assist.
Johnson's jump shot gave Jones its longest lead of the opening half at 42-16 with 1:48 to play in the second quarter.
Endia Holliday's (South Jones) layup with 24 seconds to play in the third period gave the Bobcats a 67-32 lead entering the final quarter.
Jones took its longest lead at 78-36 with 3:19 remaining on a layup by
Kimaya Dixon (Lafayette).
The Bobcats shot 41 percent (29-of-70) from the floor and made 6-of-14 (43 percent) 3-pointers. Jones was 16-of-22 from the free throw line.
The Tigers only made 16-of-75 shots from the field and were just 2-of-19 (11 percent) from 3-point range. Coahoma made 12-of-22 free throws.
Jones outrebounded Coahoma 60-49. The Bobcats committed 15 turnovers and the Tigers had 14.
The Bobcats outscored Coahoma 38-18 on points in the paint and 16-2 on fastbreak points.
