ELLISVILLE – First baseman
Lauren Lindsey (Mobile, Alabama) slugged three home runs and drove in six runs to help No. 7 Jones College sweep No. 14 Holmes here Monday afternoon at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.
Lindsey, who prepped at Baker High School, now has 18 home runs and 59 RBIs. Those two figures lead the MACCC and are tied for sixth nationally in both categories.
Nia Luckett (Philadelphia) tossed a one-hitter to help the Bobcats win the opener 8-0 in five innings. Lindsey blasted two homers and had four RBIs to help Jones to a 12-7 victory in game two.
Jones, 33-7 overall and winners of 11 straight games, finishes MACCC play at 22-6. The Bobcats will play in the MACCC Tournament May 5-8 at a site to be determined. If Itawamba sweeps Meridian on Tuesday, then ICC will host the tournament.
The Bobcats conclude regular season play with a 1 p.m. Sunday home doubleheader vs. Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana). Both games will air on JCJC.TV.
Holmes is 22-16 overall and ends conference play at 13-15.
Game 1 – Jones 8, Holmes 0 (5 inn.)
Luckett gave up a leadoff infield single Kelsie Travis and that was it. She issued a walk in the fourth inning. She ended the game with 10 strikeouts as she improved to 8-4.
Tyesha Cole (Philadelphia) tripled to start the game for Jones and scored on a single by Luckett. Lindsey's fielder's choice drove in Luckett to make it 2-0.
Kat Wallace (Brookhaven) doubled in the second, stole third and scored on a throwing error.
Meagan Wynne (Richland) doubled to start the fourth inning and scored on a single by
Tia'Rain Saunders (Choctaw Central).
Kristian Edwards (Laurel) followed with an RBI double and Cole's infield hit scored Edwards to make it 6-0.
Lindsey led off the fifth with a home run. With two outs,
Maycee Knight (Enterprise) singled, stole second and scored on a single by Saunders, which ended the game.
Cole tripled and singled and Saunders had two singles.
Kelsie Travis pitched all 4.2 innings for Holmes and took the loss.
Game 2 – Jones 12, Holmes 7
The Bobcats fell behind quickly as Camm Neathery hit a 3-run home run in the top of the first inning.
But Jones responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Wynne had a two-run single,
Mackenzie Jones (South Jones) drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Jones would later score on a steal of home.
Holmes took advantage of two errors in the second inning and scored twice to take a 5-4 lead.
Lindsey led off the third with a home run. Wynne doubled and Knight hit a two-run home run to give Jones the lead for good at 7-6.
In the fourth, Luckett singled and Lindsey followed with a two-run shot to put Jones ahead, 9-6.
Wallace reached on a bunt single in the fifth and Edwards followed with a two-run blast. Cole doubled and Lindsey drove her in with another double.
Sterling James (DeSoto Central) came on at the start of the second inning and got the win. She pitched 6.0 innings, allowed four runs (one earned), eight hits, walked one and struck out five. She is now 12-1 on the year. Starter
Breley Boykin (Jackson Prep) pitched first inning, giving up three runs and two hits. She walked three and struck out two.
Lindsey homered twice and doubled with Knight getting a home run and two singles and Wynne had a double and two singles.
Neathery homered, singled and had four RBIs for Holmes. Madeline McCown homered and singled twice for the Bulldogs.
Starter Malita Chaffler tossed 2.0 innings and got the loss. She allowed seven runs (all earned), six hits and walked three.
