ELLISVILLE –
Nia Luckett (Philadelphia) had a big day in the circle and at the plate for No. 8 Jones College here Tuesday evening at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.
Luckett struck out a career-high 12 batters and allowed just four hits to lead Jones to a 2-1 win over Pearl River in game one. Her walk-off double in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two gave the Bobcats a 9-1 victory.
Jones, winners of nine straight, is now 31-7 overall and 20-6 in the MACCC. The Bobcats will host Holmes on Monday, April 26 (originally this Saturday). Jones will also host Baton Rouge in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on May 2.
PRCC, 23-13 overall and 15-9 in league play, hosts Southwest Thursday and ends its conference schedule at Northeast on Saturday.
Game 1 – Jones 2, Pearl River 1 (8 inn.)
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Promise Shanks and Taelor York drew one-out walks and McKall Holder followed with an RBI single.
Jones tied it in the sixth.
Lauren Lindsey (Mobile, Alabama) drew a one-out walk and was replaced by pinch-runner
Mycah Hall (Nettleton). Hall stole second and, with two outs, scored when Megan Wynne (Richland) reached on an error.
The Bobcats won it in the eighth when
Tyesha Cole (Philadelphia) led off with a single and stole second. Luckett followed with a single to put runners on first and third. Lindsey then hit a fielder's choice grounder to second, but the throw home was too late.
Luckett improved to 7-4 with the win. She issued four walks in the game.
Kat Wallace (Brookhaven) had a double with Cole, Luckett,
Lauren Pope (Pearl) and Wynne adding singles.
Hannah Embry pitched the whole game for Pearl River and got the loss. She allowed two runs (one earned), five hits, walked three and struck out three. She is now 11-4.
Holder, Kaitlynn Passeau, Sydney Runnels and Abigail Thexton each had singles for Pearl River.
Game 2 – Jones 9, Pearl River 1 (8 inn.)
The Bobcats sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the third inning to take control of game two.
Pearl River took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Jones tied it in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Lindsey.
Luckett's fielder's choice scored
Kristian Edwards (Laurel) to get things rolling in the third. Lindsey then followed with her team-leading 15th home run of the season to put Jones up, 4-1. Pope and Wynne followed with base hits and Hall got with a two-run double.
Sydney Pevey's (Lawrence County) sacrifice bunt scored
Kat Wallace (Brookhaven) to make it 7-1.
With the bases empty and two outs in the sixth, Edwards singled and Cole reached on an infield single. Luckett's two-run double ended the game.
Breley Boykin (Jackson Prep) got the win, upping her record to 13-2. She went 6.0 innings, allowed one run, five hits, walked three and struck out one.
Cole had two singles with Luckett, Wynne and Hall adding doubles. Lindsey homered and drove in three runs giving her 53 RBIs on the year.
Starter Danielle Lalonde went 2.1 innings and got the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned). Madelyn Burch went the final 3.1 innings.
York had two singles for the Wildcats.
