ELLISVILLE – No. 8 Jones College slugged five home runs and
Nia Luckett (Philadelphia) tossed a one-hitter as the Bobcats swept East Mississippi here Sunday afternoon at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.
Leading 7-6 entering the bottom of the sixth inning of game one, the Bobcats scored seven runs to run-rule EMCC, 14-6. In game two, Luckett did not allow a hit until two outs in the sixth inning and Jones posted an 8-0 decision.
The Bobcats, 29-7 overall and 18-6 in the MACCC, host Pearl River in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday. Jones has won seven straight games.
EMCC, 7-25 and 7-19 in the conference, ends their season by hosting Hinds on April 24.
Game 1 – Jones 14, East Miss. 6 (6 inn.)
Lauren Pope (Pearl) slugged two home runs and
Lauren Lindsey (Mobile, Alabama) and
Kristian Edwards (Laurel) added round trippers for the Bobcats. The Bobcats have 73 home runs on the season.
Pope, who has 10 home runs on the year, hit a two-run home run in the third inning.
EMCC scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to trim the Jones' lead to 7-6.
Tyesha Cole (Philadelphia) led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, Luckett had a bunt single and Lindsey hit a three-run home run. With two outs, Pope homered,
Kat Wallace (Brookhaven) singled and
Mycah Hall (Nettleton) had an RBI single. Edwards then hit her 12th home run of the season to end the game.
Pope had two home runs, a single and three RBIs. Edwards had a home run and two singles. Lindsey had three RBIs.
Breley Boykin (Jackson Prep) went the first 4.0 innings and got the win, improving to 12-2. She allowed two runs (one earned), three hits, walked three and struck out two.
Sterling James (DeSoto Central) pitched 2.0 innings, gave four runs and struck out two.
Lily Ramsey and Jenna Coker homered for the Lions.
EMCC starter Rylee Bourland went 5.2 innings, allowed 14 runs (11 earned), 15 hits, walked one and struck out none.
Game 2 – Jones 8, East Miss. 0 (6 inn.)
Luckett was in control from the start.
She allowed a two-out walk in the second inning and a two-out single by Ramsey in the sixth and that was it. Luckett, 6-4, pitched 6.0 innings, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out eight.
Lindsey hit a two-run home run in the third – her team-leading 14th of the season – to give Jones a 4-0 lead.
With the Bobcats leading 6-0 going to the bottom of the sixth, Edwards walked and Cole Walked. Luckett followed with an RBI single and Lindsey ended the game with an RBI double.
Lindsey homered, doubled, singled twice and drove in four runs. Edwards had a double and a single.
Jenna Coker went the distance (5.1 innings) and got the loss. She allowed eight runs (seven earned), walked six and struck out two.
