ELLISVILLE – No. 13 Mississippi Gulf Coast defeated No. 14 Jones College 5-1 in the Region 23 Tennis championship here Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Both teams, along with Itawamba, will advance to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament May 17-21 in Plano, Texas. Itawamba edged Copiah-Lincoln 4-3 in the third place match.
The Bobcats are 17-4 on the season and Gulf Coast is 20-2.
Jones picked up its only win in No. 1 singles where
Gaspar Meda (Argentina) beat Seth Macute, 6-3, 6-3.
Gulf Coast began the day by sweeping the doubles' points.
Pedro Molero and Clay Fudge downed Meda and
Daniel Panzica (Brookhaven) in No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Macute and Wesley Fontaine beat
Nacho Vanecek (Argentina) and
Trey Hilton (Pearl) in No. 2 doubles, 8-2.
Braxton Wallis (Brookhaven) and
John Jabour (Warren Central) fell to Anderson Dulane and Jackson Ward in No. 3 doubles, 4-8.
Panzica lost to Fontaine in No. 3 singles, 3-6, 5-7 and Hilton dropped a 3-6, 3-6 decision to Fudge in No. 4 singles.
Trey Hilton and
Ryan Myers were named to the All-MACCC team.
