Dalton Rogers (Northwest Rankin) had another stellar effort for Jones College.
Rogers struck out 10 and allowed only three hits to lead the Bobcats to a 4-1 victory over Hinds in game one of a doubleheader here Tuesday at Community Bank Park. It was the fourth time this season for Rogers to record double digits in strikeouts.
It was the final home regular season doubleheader for the Bobcats.
The Eagles held off Jones 7-5 in game two.
The Bobcats, 20-16 overall and 13-9 in MACCC play, will visit East Mississippi for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
Hinds, 15-13 and 13-9, visits Coahoma on Saturday.
Game 1 – Jones 4, Hinds 1
Rogers, a Southern Miss commit, gave up a leadoff walk in the top of the first inning to Matt Corder, followed by an RBI double by Vantrel Reed and that was it.
He ended up pitching 8.0 innings, walked three and improved his record to 3-3.
Garrett Langrell (Bay) pitched the final inning and had a strikeout and earned his fourth save.
Jones took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first when
Murray Hutchinson (Madison Central) led off with a walk, stole second, went to third on a
Jesse Johnson (Purvis) groundout and scored on an infield single by
DeeJay Booth (Oak Grove).
Preston Ratliff (Slidell, Louisiana) followed with a double and
Kade Keeton (Brandon) was hit by a pitch.
Tyler Ducksworth (South Jones) then delivered a two-run double.
Jones ended the scoring in the second when
Chase Honeycutt (DeSoto Central) led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second by
Hunter French (DeSoto Central), went to third on an infield hit by Hutchinson and scored on Johnson's infield single.
Hutchinson had two singles for the Bobcats. Ratliff and Ducksworth doubled with Johnson, Booth, Keeton and French adding singles.
Reed doubled for the Eagles.
Starter Caleb Sterling – the first of five Hinds' pitchers – went 2.1 innings and took the loss. He allowed four runs, five hits and two walks.
Game 2 – Hinds 7, Jones 5
Hinds led 3-1 entering the fourth inning when they sent eight batters to the plate and expanded the lead to 7-1.
Jones got a run in the fifth and had runners at second and third with one out and a chance to cut into the lead some more. But a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
In the sixth, the Bobcats loaded the bases with one out.
Ratliff was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Booth walked to score another run. Pinch-hitter
Garrett Clendenning (Biloxi) struck out, but reached on a passed ball to allow another run to score to make it 7-5. But a ground out to the pitcher ended the inning.
The Bobcats were retired in order in the seventh.
Booth had two singles and three RBIs to lead Jones. Hutchinson, Keeton, Ducksworth and French added singles.
Starter
Cole Mozingo (Northeast Jones) went 3.1 innings and got the loss, falling to 2-2. He gave up three earned runs, five hits, walked three and struck out four. Keeton,
Colby Tubre (D'Iberville),
Andrew Nix (Stringer) and Johnson also pitched.
Connor Carter doubled and singled for the Eagles. Corder, Reed, and Sterling each had two singles.
Starter Bryce Brock went 5.0 innings and got the win, improving to 4-3. He allowed no earned runs, five hits, walked three and struck out five. Noah Magee went the final 1.1 innings, allowed no hits and struck out three to earn his first save.
