ELLISVILLE – The Jones College Bobcats were named the nation's top-ranked team by the NJCAA on Monday afternoon.
It is the first time in school history for the women's team to be ranked first in the nation and the first time a Mississippi school has been ranked first since Northeast in 1987.
Several hours later, the Bobcats lived up to the billing.
Jones outscored Copiah-Lincoln 28-11 in the fourth quarter and defeated the Wolves 66-50 here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The Bobcats are now 12-0 on the season,10-0 in the MACCC. Jones will go to Hinds on Thursday and will host Mississippi Gulf Coast at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 20.
Jones trailed 39-38 entering the final quarter, but used big plays by
Daisha Bradford (Mobile, Alabama),
Endia Holliday (South Jones) and
Lekera Hughes (Oak Grove) to rally for the victory.
Braford's layup at 8:34 gave Jones the lead for good at 43-41. Holliday then hit back-to-back layups to increase the lead to 47-41. A Hughes' 3-pointer ended a 12-0 run and gave the Bobcats a 57-43 lead with 3:59 remaining.
After Co-Lin's Aniya Sanders hit a 3-pointer, Hughes answered with another trey to make it 60-46 with 3:28 remaining.
The game was close in the first half with Jones leading 15-13 after the first quarter and 25-24 at halftime.
The Bobcats took over in the final quarter with Bradford scoring 11 of her game-high 19 points in the quarter. Holliday scored all six of her points and Hughes scored six points in the final period.
Jones ended up shooting 39 percent from the floor (26-of-66) and limited Co-Lin to just 28 percent (15-of-54). The Bobcats also forced 26 turnovers, while committing 16 of their own.
The Bobcats, after being outrebounded 25-20 in the first half, ended up with a 43-41 edge on the boards and outscored the Wolves on points in the paint, 36-18.
Hughes finished with 14 points and Jakayla Johnson (Clinton) added 10.
Kyjai Miles (Dallas, Texas) led the team with eight rebounds. Holliday finished with seven, Bradford had six and Johnson five. Hughes had six steals and Johnson added three.
Sanders was the only Co-Lin player in double figures with 16 points. Jakyla Esco had 10 rebounds for the Wolves.
Co-Lin, 5-5 overall and in conference play, hosts Meridian on Thursday.
