Jones smacks eight home runs, pitching staff punches out 19 at EC

DECATUR – No. 6 Jones scored a combined 28 runs on 25 hits with eight home runs and the pitching trio of Nia Luckett, Breley Boykin and Sterling James struck out 19 as the Bobcats swept East Central 17-2 and 11-6 Wednesday night.

Jones ran its win streak to six games, outscoring those six opponents 105-10. The Bobcats improved to 17-3 overall and 6-2 in league play. EC fell to 4-12.

After eight straight away from home, Jones will open up a 10-game homestand on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Northeast Mississippi.

Game 1 – Jones 17, East Central 2

Six different Bobcats hit home runs and a 10-run second inning broke the game wide open for a run-rule win.

The top three hitters in the order all had multiple hits, with Kristian Edwards going 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs.

Edwards, Lauren Lindsey, Tia'Rain Saunders, Maycee Knight, Mackenzie Jones and Skylar McLellan all homered in the win.

Breley Boykin struck out 11 in consecutive games to run her season win-loss record to 8-1. She scattered six hits and two runs.

Game 2 – Jones 11, East Central 6

A three-run bomb from Zharia Richardson pulled the Lady Warriors within one, 7-6, going into the sixth, but it was the visiting Bobcats that scored the final four runs to sweep the day.

Tia Saunders homered for the second straight game, and seventh time this season, and Tyesha Cole hit her third long ball of the season.

Nia Luckett (2-2) threw 4.2 solid innings only allowing four hits with five strikeouts, but ran into trouble in the fifth. Sterling James mowed down the Warriors the final 2.1 frames, scattering two hits and no runs to preserve the win for Luckett and her third save of the year.

Bobbie Amond started behind the plate and drove in a run for the third straight game.
