Boykin, Edwards spark No. 4 Jones to sweep of Commodores

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – No. 4 Jones College notched a sweep of a Division I opponent here Sunday afternoon.
 
Breley Boykin (Jackson Prep) tossed a complete game with 12 strikeouts in the 6-1, opening game win over Gulf Coast State (Florida). In game two, Kristian Edwards (Laurel) was 2-for-5 with five RBIs as the Bobcats completed the sweep, 7-4.
 
Jones was originally set to play three games in the Chipola Tournament in Dothan, Alabama. But those games were canceled because of rain.
 
The Bobcats, 4-0, host Coastal Alabama-South in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field. The games will be streamed on JCJC.TV.
Jones was scheduled to host Baton Rouge Community College on Feb. 12, but those games have been postponed to March 31 because of the possibility of inclement weather.
 
Gulf Coast State, 2-5, hosts Wallace St.-Dothan (Alabama) on Tuesday. Former Bobcat standout pitcher Karli Perque in an assistant coach for the Commodores.
 
Game 1 – Jones 6, Gulf Coast State 1
Boykin allowed only five hits and walked three as she improved to 2-0.
 
Edwards homered and had two RBIs in the game.
 
Kat Wallace (Brookhaven) had a double with Lauren Pope (Pearl), Maycee Knight (Enterprise-Clarke), Tia'Rain Saunders (Choctaw Central) and McKinley Weeks (Jackson Prep) adding singles.
 
The game was tied 1-1 after four innings, but Jones took charge with three runs in the fifth – two off Kat Knight's pinch-hit double – and two in the sixth.
 
Mabry Briggs and Hanna Segars each doubled for the Commodores. Taylor Lee was tagged with the loss.
 
Game 2 – Jones 7, Gulf Coast State 4
Edwards homered and doubled to spark the offense.
 
Wallace had two singles and a double. Tyesha Cole (Philadelphia) and Lauren Lindsey (Mobile, Alabama) added singles.
 
Sterling James (DeSoto Central) went the distance to improve to 2-0. She allowed four runs, six hits, walked none and struck out six.
 
Gulf Coast St. led 2-1 after one, but the Bobcats came back with three runs in the second and two more in third to take control.
 
Segars and Summer Johnson homered for the Commodores. 
 
GraceAnne Spears was tagged with the loss.
