Jones outlasts Northeast in penalty kicks, 5-4, to take Pool B lead

WICHITA, Kan. – Jones got the three points it was looking for on Monday on Day 1 of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

Both teams came in with long winning streaks. Jones had won 14 straight, Northeast a dozen in a row. Neither got the win, but both kept their unbeaten streaks going with Monday's 1-1 double overtime draw.

Things got off to a rocky start, with JC allowing a goal just 2:08 in, but the Bobcats found the equalizer from Kendyl Terrell in the 51st minute and outlasted No. 18 Northeast (Neb.) in penalty kicks to take the lead in Pool B play.

Jones trailed at the half for the first time all season, 1-0, but scored six minutes into the second half to level the match at 1-1.

The Bobcats dominated on the stat sheet, outshooting the Hawks 22-3.

Tied after 90 minutes and another 20 in a pair of scoreless overtime periods, the match went to penalties.

Both teams made their first four kicks, before a Northeast miss wide left in Round 5 opened the door. Keona Crowell then drilled it lower 90 to give Jones a 5-4 win and three points.

Jones gets a day off Tuesday before returning to the pitch Wednesday at 1:30 to face 10th-ranked Muskegon.
