WICHITA, Kansas – Looking for its second consecutive trip to the national semifinals with a win on Wednesday, No. 2 Jones conceded a heartbreaking golden goal in the 108th minute to drop a 2-1 double overtime decision to 10th-ranked Muskegon (Mich).
Jones' magical season comes to an end at 14-2-1. Muskegon, now 16-3-1, advances to the weekend's semifinals.
In a match dominated statistically by the Bobcats, the Jayhawks scored their two goals off three total shots on goal. Jones out-shot MCC 19-6 overall and 10-3 on goal.
Kendyl Terrell broke a scoreless draw in the 74th minute, delivering a left-footed strike into the left corner of the net for her 18th goal of the year.
Jones allowed the equalizer with 4:34 left on a goal by Sammy Hecht.
Into extra time,
Bekah Baugh's rifle shot was just left of the goal in the 99th minute.
Muskegon was able to score the golden goal off a corner kick in the 108th minute. A ball on the left side was played into the box, and after it pinballed around in the box in a large crowd, somehow Iris Herald got a foot on it for the game-winner.
Keeper Tara McGrath was the MVP for the match for Muskegon, stopping nine shots.
The two goals surrendered by
Danae Fowler were the lone two allowed all season by the sophomore in nearly 700 minutes. She ends her career 19-4 between the posts with eight goals allowed in 27 matches.
Jones' rise up to No. 2 is the highest single-season ranking in program history by the NJCAA. Head coach
Dolores Deasley's record now stands at 181-47-4 (.789) with six conference and region titles.
