Jones blasts Southwest 7-1, clinches No. 1 spot in the south

SUMMIT – Six different Bobcats combined for seven goals as No. 2 Jones smashed Southwest, 7-1, on Tuesday afternoon to clinch the MACCC South's No. 1 seed.

Jones won its 10th straight match to improve to 10-1 overall, 8-0 in the south. Southwest fell to 3-11, 0-8.

Scoreless in the opening 28 minutes, a pair of goals in less than a three-minute span gave Jones a 2-0 lead. Bekah Baugh scored on a rebound and Izzie Scott connected on a penalty kick.

Alexandra Shimasaki cut the lead in half for the Lady Bears in the 33rd minute, placing a shot just out of the reach of Makenna Yarrow in the left-hand corner.

Late goals by Kendyl Terrell in the 43rd minute and Leahmae Keogh in the 45th allowed Jones to take a 4-1 lead into the break.

Just four minutes into the second half, a nice corner kick from Keogh found Keona Crowell in traffic, making it 5-1.

Terrell scored again in the 78th minute off a service in by Morgan Durning and Fay Wielinga netted her first collegiate goal with 55 seconds left to cap the scoring.

Jones out-shot Southwest 37-3, including 17-2 on net.

Yarrow played the opening 68 minutes and Baylee Boyette the final 22 to close out a clean second half in net.

The Bobcats host Meridian on Friday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. to close out the regular season home schedule. It'll be the last time to see the women at home, with the Bobcats clinching a spot in the MACCC semifinals Nov. 6-7.
