Blalock shines for No. 6 Bobcats vs. Dyersburg State

ELLISVILLE Wyatt Blalock (Madison Central) gave the No. 6 Jones College Bobcats just what they needed in the series finale against Dyersburg State.
 
The freshman right-hander retired the first 12 batters he faced and led the Bobcats to their first win of the season, a 5-3 victory over Dyersburg State (Tennessee) here Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park in game two of a doubleheader.
 
The Eagles took the opener, 10-4, on Saturday. Dyersburg State won the opening game of the series on Friday, 9-5.
  
Game 1 – Dyersburg State 10, Jones 4
Jones College issued nine walks and committed three errors in a 10-4 loss to Dyersburg State to open Saturday competition.
 
The game was tied 1-1 after two innings, but the Eagles took the lead for good with three runs in the third. Trailing 5-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, Jones scored three runs to cut the lead to 5-4.
 
But Dyersburg responded with three runs in the top of the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh.
 
Basiel Williams Jr. (Ponchatoula, Louisiana) doubled and singled and Gabe Lacy (Gulfport) singled twice for Jones. Bailee Hendon (Vancleave), Kirkland Trahan (Madison Central), O'Neill Burgos (Brookhaven Academy) and Blake Johnson (Gulfport) added singles.

Starter Cade Killingsworth (North Pike) went 3.2 innings and got the loss. He allowed five runs (four earned), seven hits, walked one and struck out four. Landon Rascoe (Hattiesburg) tossed .2 innings, giving up three runs on no hits and six walks. Cole Mozingo (Northeast Jones) pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs, five hits, two walks and recording four strikeouts.
 
Chris Mondesi doubled and singled twice for the Eagles with Drew Reckart getting a double and a single and Hirsch adding two singles. Austin Bradbury had a solo home run.
 
Starter Jack Webb went 5.0 innings and got the win, allowing four runs, six hits, one walk and picking up a pair of strikeouts.

Game 2 – Jones 5, Dyersburg State 3
Blalock struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced and ended his 4.2 inning stint with nine strikeouts. He allowed no walks and four hits.
 
Jones took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Tyler Ducksworth (South Jones) and Basiel Williams Jr. (Ponchatoula, Louisiana) led off with singles and Bailee Hendon (Vancleave) walked to load the bases with no outs.
 
Kirkland Trahan's (Madison Central) single to center scored Ducksworth. O'Neill Burgos (Brookhaven Academy) then hit into a 5-U-3 double play, but Williams scored on the play to make it 2-0.
 
Jones added three runs in the fourth.
 
Blake Johnson (Gulfport) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Murray Hutchinson (Madison Central) followed with a single to left. A wild pitch advanced the runners. 
 
After a pair of strikeouts, Williams came up with a big two-run single to left-center. Williams stole second and scored when Hendon followed with a single to right to make it 5-0.
 
Kevin Hirsch broke up Blalock's no-hit bid with a single to start the fifth inning. Seth Copeland followed with a single and Kameron Wells drove in Hirsch with another single. A Zach Bondurant single drove in Copeland.
 
Garrett Langrell (Bay) entered for Blalock and got a fly ball to end the inning.
 
Langrell would go the final 2.1 innings and record a save. He gave up an unearned run, two hits, no walks and struck out two.
 
Williams had two singles and scored twice. Hendon, Trahan, Burgos, Hutchinson, Hayden Harris (Pontotoc) and Ducksworth added singles.
 
Wells singled twice for the Eagles with Hirsch, Copeland, Bondurant and Lane Harris adding singles.
 
Starter Jonathan Alexander went 3.0 innings and got the loss. He allowed four runs, five hits, walked two and struck out one. Aidan Frye went the final 3.0 innings, giving up a run, three hits, no walks and notching three strikeouts.
 
Dyersburg State, 5-1, visits Southern Union (Alabama) on Friday.
