ELLISVILLE – The 20th-ranked Jones College men's tennis team stayed unbeaten on the young season with a hard-fought 8-1 victory over Meridian on Tuesday.
"Our guys looked strong throughout the entire match," fourth-year head coach
Brooks Buffington said. "We had an especially big win by
Jacob Johnson and
Kwanda Mbalekwa at No. 1 doubles where they got a late break and held in a tight match."
Mbalekwa and Johnson held off Matthew Tennant and Dawson Welch, 9-7, at No. 1 before
Daniel Panzica and
James McWilliams downed Taylor Jefcoat and Dieter Gonzales, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.
Jones led 3-0 heading into singles play and swept No.'s 2-6 to take the match 8-1. The lone loss came at No. 1 singles where Mbalekwa was defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Tennant.
Gaspar Meda, Panzica, Johnson,
Trey Hilton and
James McWilliams all won in straight sets.
Jones (4-0) will host Holmes on Friday, Feb. 14 in Ellisville. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
