PERKINSTON – The 2020 football season ended for Jones College here Thursday night at A.L. May Stadium.
Mississippi Gulf Coast outgained the Bobcats 526-199 and defeated Jones, 35-8.
Jones ends a COVID-19 shortened season 3-2.
Gulf Coast, 5-0, will host Northwest on Dec. 5 for the MACCC championship. The Bulldogs have won 21 consecutive games.
The Bobcats had a difficult time all the way around with Gulf Coast.
The Bulldogs ran 80 plays from scrimmage, compared to 58 for Jones. Gulf Coast was 13-of-19 on third down conversions and Jones was just 2-of-11.
Defensive back
Travor Randle (Greenwood) had 10 tackles, one tackle for loss and two quarterback hurries and linebacker
Kenderian Dixon (Yazoo County) had eight tackles. Linebacker
DeLawrence Butler (Clinton) had seven tackles and one tackle for loss and defensive back
Tylan Glass (Nanih Waiya) had seven tackles.
Quarterback
Quaterius Hawkins (Bastrop, Louisiana) was 10-of-26 through the air for 226 yards. Wide receiver
Markel McLaurin (Collins) had two catches for 97 yards and wide receiver
Ashton Nickelberry (Brandon) had four catches for 42 yards.
Jones had minus-27 yards rushing as a team.
The Bulldogs took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when quarterback Philip Short found Jalen Bracey for a 36-yard scoring strike to end a 43-yard, six-play drive. Caden Davis made the PAT with 10:49 left in the first half.
Two possessions later, JC had its best scoring opportunity of the first half.
The Bobcats drove 53 yards in 11 plays, but
Gavin Gaudin's (Northwest Rankin) 33-yard field goal attempt was wide right.
Gulf Coast took possession at their 20-yard line following the missed kick.
Five plays later, Short found Jymetre Hester behind the secondary for a 68-yard touchdown pass. Davis made the extra point and Gulf Coast led 14-0 with 37 seconds left in the first half.
The Bobcats went three-and-out to start the third quarter and the Bulldogs responded with a 62-yard, seven-play scoring drive. Short found K.T. Hicks for a 9-yard touchdown pass and the extra point by Davis made it 21-0 with 10:21 to play in the third quarter.
Gulf Coast would then get a 5-yard touchdown run by Deandre House to end an 84-yard, 11-play drive. The extra point by Davis made it 28-0 with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter.
Short then tossed his fourth touchdown pass of the night, connecting with Hicks from five yards away to end a 53-yard, six-play drive. Davis made the PAT to give the Bulldogs a 35-0 lead with 13:21 remaining in the game.
The Bobcats avoided the shutout when Hawkins scored on a 1-yard run to end a 75-yard, six-play drive. He passed to Nickelberry for the two-point conversion to end the scoring at the 11:11 mark.
Short completed 23-of-38 passes for 362 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. House rushed 32 times for 150 yards and a score.
