DECATUR –East Central Community College took the lead for good late in the second quarter and defeated No. 5 Jones College, 74-71, here Monday night at the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building.
The loss snapped a 16-game Jones' winning streak and dropped the Lady Bobcats to 18-2 overall, 10-1 in the MACJC South Division.
The Lady Bobcats trailed 72-66 in the final 30 seconds.
Destiny Haymer (Holmes County Central) hit a long 3-pointer to pull Jones within 72-69 with 19 seconds to play.
ECCC then missed a free throw and had a lane violation on the second attempt with 17.2 seconds to play.
The Lady Bobcats scored with 4.5 seconds left to make it 72-71, but ECCC threw the ball downcourt and got a layup with .7 second left to end it.
Jones led for most of the first half.
The game was knotted at 16-16 late in the first quarter when
Maya Jones (Northwest Rankin) and
Keyara Jones (Heidelberg) got back-to-back baskets and
Endia Holliday (South Jones) made a free throw to give Jones a 21-16 lead. The Lady Bobcats led 21-17 after the first quarter.
Breonca Ducksworth's (West Jones) bucket with 9:51 remaining in the first half gave Jones its longest lead of the game at 23-17.
ECCC came back and took the lead for good at 36-35 on Keimoya Walker's layup at 1:04. The Lady Warriors led 38-35 at halftime.
East Central had a 15-5 start to the second half and took its longest lead of the game at 53-40 with 5:01 to play in the third quarter. A
Maya Jones basket off a Haymer assist cut the lead to 53-50 with 1:41 showing. ECCC would lead 59-52 going into the final quarter.
A Walker layup with 5:36 left in the game gave East Central a 66-55 lead, but Jones would battle back and give itself a chance at the end.
Haymer led Jones with 17 points with
Keyara Jones and
Maya Jones adding 14 points each.
Kyia Weathersby (Collins) had eight rebounds and Haymer had five assists.
Jariyah Covington had 22 points for East Central. Breanna Riley added 11 and Walker had 10.
Jones was 24-of-63 from the field (5-of-16 from 3-point range) for 38 percent. The Lady Bobcats were 18-of-23 from the free throw line.
ECCC was 25-of-63 from the field (4-of-11 from 3-point range) for 40 percent. The Lady Warriors were 20-of-27 from the free throw line.
ECCC outrebounded Jones, 36-33.
East Central is now 15-5 overall, 6-4 in the division.
The Lady Bobcats will host Southwest at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and the game will air on www.jcjc.tv.
East Central will visit Meridian on Thursday.
