Box Score ELLISVILLE – The Jones College Bobcats and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs have a colorful history on the gridiron.
Thursday's 16-13 victory by No. 13 Jones over No. 12 MGCCC before a large crowd at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field fit right in with the series tradition.
The Bobcats are now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the MACJC South Division, while MGCCC is 3-1 and 0-1. Jones now leads the series over the Bulldogs, 46-43-3.
The Bobcats ran two fake field goals with one of them resulting in a touchdown. Jones also returned a blocked extra point for two points. The Bobcats also had a fake punt, but it was unsuccessful.
Jones running back Kalyn Grandberry (Memphis, Tennessee) rushed 28 times for 171 yards.
Defensive end Chei Hill (Miami, Florida) had two sacks on MGCCC's final series and was relentless all evening. Cornerback Jamar Richardson (Aliceville, Alabama) led a Jones' secondary that held the high-powered Bulldog passing attack to 119 yards with only 11 completions in 33 attempts.
It appeared MGCCC would jump out to a quick lead.
On its first series, the Bulldogs faced a fourth and 5 at its 46. MGCCC punted, but Jones was called for offsides to give the Bulldogs a first down.
Seven plays later, MGCCC had a first and goal at the Jones 1-yard line. But the Bulldogs fumbled and the Bobcats recovered to end the threat.
The game then turned into a punting contest with each team combining to punt on nine straight possessions.
Jones attempted to punt on the 10thconsecutive possession, but the snap was bobbled and MGCCC tackled Bobcat punter Greg Hayden at the Jones 14-yard line.
Two plays later, Terrion Avery ran 14 yards for a touchdown.
On the extra point attempt, the kick was blocked. Raheem Shorter (Port Gibson) picked up the ball and ran it back 95 yards for a two-point play. That made it 6-2 with 5:18 left in the first half.
Jones took the second half kickoff and would proceed to drive 65 yards in nine plays.
On fourth and goal at the MGCCC 2-yard line, holder Davis Harrison (Lamar School) took the snap, went up the middle and bulled his way into the end zone. Cristofer Thompson's (Adams County Christian School) extra point gave the Bobcats a 9-6 lead with 10:40 left in the third quarter.
But the lead was short-lived.
MGCCC took over at its own 25 after a touchback.
On first down, Avery ran 35 yards to the Bobcat 40. On the next play, quarterback Lowell Narcisse took it 40 yards for a touchdown. Mason Hunt's extra point put MGCCC up 13-9 with 10:14 left in the third quarter.
Two possessions later, the Bulldogs drove to the Jones 25. They would lose six yards back to the 31 and Hunt's 48-yard field goal attempt would be no good.
The Bobcats would take over and would have a fourth and 2 at their own 39. But Fred Peters (Columbia) would be stopped for a loss of a yard on a fake punt and MGCCC would take over.
The Bulldogs would then face a fourth down at the Bobcat 34, but the Bobcat defense would force an incomplete pass.
Jones would then take over and drive 66 yards in nine plays.
Donte Edwards (Mobile, Alabama) would take a handoff on third and 2 at the MGCCC 25 and take it the distance. Thompson's kick gave Jones a 16-13 lead with 10:42 to play.
On the Bobcats next possession, they moved from their own 20 to the MGCCC 27. On fourth down and 2, the Bobcats ran another fake field goal attempt, but this time Harrison was stopped.
But the Bobcat defense would force a '3 and out' and Jones took over at its own 36 with 4:01 left.
The Bulldogs would force a Jones punt and Hayden came through with a 30-yarder that went out of bounds at the MGCCC 11 with just 1:39 to play.
After three straight incomplete passes, the Bulldogs threw another incomplete pass on fourth down, but Jones was called for roughing the passer to give MGCCC new life.
Narcisse would later connect with Mystikal McGhee for a 26-yard pass completion out to the Bulldog 45.
But an incomplete pass, back-to-back sacks by Hill and another incomplete pass would force MGCCC to turn the ball over on downs with just three seconds to play.
Bobcat quarterback Stetson Bennett (Blackshear, Georgia) would take a knee and the game was over.
Jones returns home for a 7 p.m. game vs. Southwest Mississippi on Sept. 27. The game will air on www.jcjc.tvand WLAU-FM, 99.3, with Mark Easley and Luke Johnson on the call.
The Bulldogs will host Copiah-Lincoln on Sept. 27.
