Jones erases 27-point fourth quarter deficit, stuns Southwest 41-40

SUMMIT – Down 27 points at Southwest midway through the fourth quarter, Jones College appeared headed for a disappointing fourth straight loss Thursday night.

Instead, the Bobcats authored a comeback for the ages.

"I'm just proud of the way they kept fighting for each other," second-year head coach Lytrel Pollard said.

Santae McWilliams Jr. scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 13 seconds remaining, and Wyatt Jones drilled the go-ahead extra point as Jones rallied from a 40-13 deficit to stun Southwest 41-40 at John I. Hurst Stadium.

The Bobcats (4-4, 2-2 MACCC South) scored 28 unanswered points in the final 8:20, turning what looked like a certain defeat into one of the most improbable victories in program history.

Sophomore quarterback Jevarion Glover spearheaded the furious rally, throwing for 341 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Jones scored touchdowns on four consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter, with the final three coming in a span of just 7:49.

Southwest (1-7, 0-5) led 33-6 at halftime and stretched its advantage to 40-13 on Bernard Lackey's 78-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter.

Glover ignited the comeback with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Jones, capping a six-play, 55-yard drive with 8:20 remaining. Just 18 seconds later, the Bobcats struck again.

Glover connected with Tyree Barnett on a 42-yard touchdown pass after recovering an onside kick, and another Jones conversion suddenly made it 40-27 with 8:02 to play.

After getting the ball back at its own 14-yard line, Jones marched 86 yards in seven plays, with Glover scoring on a 7-yard run. The extra point pulled the Bobcats within 40-34 with 3:20 remaining.

Still needing another stop and a touchdown, Jones got both.

The Bobcats regained possession at their own 37 with 1:53 remaining and mounted one final drive. Glover directed the offense 63 yards in five plays, setting up McWilliams' 2-yard touchdown run with just 13 seconds on the clock.

Wyatt Jones, who had already connected on field goals of 33 and 32 yards earlier in the contest, calmly delivered the decisive extra point to complete the remarkable turnaround.

Jones outscored Southwest 28-0 in the fourth quarter after being outscored 40-13 through the first three periods.

The Bobcats finished with 470 yards of total offense, including 341 through the air and 129 on the ground. Glover completed 24 of 43 passes with three touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing for 32 yards and another score.

Jalen Jones and Barnett each finished with 125 receiving yards. Jones hauled in a game-high 10 passes, while Barnett caught seven, including his pivotal 42-yard fourth-quarter touchdown.

Jet Henderson added three receptions for 44 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown catch on Jones' opening possession of the second half.

CJ Rush led the Bobcats on the ground with 65 yards on 18 carries, while McWilliams added 28 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

The victory was even more remarkable considering how badly things unraveled for Jones in the opening half.

Southwest needed just 12 seconds to take the lead, with Jakhari Williams connecting with Tahj Williby on a 73-yard touchdown pass on the Bears' first offensive snap.

Simon Naylor added a 24-yard field goal to make it 10-0 before Wyatt Jones put the Bobcats on the board with a 33-yarder.

The Bears then exploded for 23 second-quarter points.

Ronde Baker scored on a 13-yard run, Jace Jackson returned a blocked punt 14 yards for a touchdown and later added a 3-yard scoring run to extend Southwest's lead to 30-3.

Wyatt Jones connected from 32 yards to briefly stop the bleeding, but Naylor's 20-yard field goal with two seconds remaining sent the Bears into halftime with a commanding 33-6 advantage.

Jones opened the second half with an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive, capped by Glover's 28-yard touchdown pass to Henderson, before Lackey's fumble return restored Southwest's 27-point cushion.

The Bears would not score again.

Despite Southwest's early offensive success, the Jones defense held the Bears to 338 total yards and did not allow a third-down conversion in nine opportunities.

Delarrius Hayes led the Bobcats with 11 tackles, including three for loss and a sack. Lathan Lewis added seven stops, while Dalyn Pierce finished with five tackles and a sack.

Williams completed 10 of 16 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown for Southwest. Williby caught three passes for 109 yards, while Baker rushed for 71 yards and a score.

The Bobcats also overcame two interceptions, a lost fumble and 112 penalty yards to secure their second division victory.

Jones hosts East Central, who just upset unbeaten Gulf Coast, Thursday, Oct. 22 in the home finale.
