ELLISVILLE – The No. 8 Jones College Lady Bobcats dropped an 84-77 decision to No. 6 Shelton State Community College (Alabama) here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
It was expected to be a good matchup between two of the nation's top teams and it was.
The Lady Bucs held the edge early, taking a 13-6 lead with 4:48 to play in the first quarter when Ayanna Trigg scored. Two free throws by
Destiny Haymer (Holmes County Central) cut the lead to 15-14 with 2:07 showing. Shelton State would lead 19-15 after the first period.
The Lady Bobcats scored the first six points of the second quarter and took its first lead of the game at 21-19 when
Keyara Jones (Heidelberg) scored at 8:18. Jones would eventually take a 29-26 lead with 4:27 showing when
Kyia Weathersby (Collins) scored with Haymer getting the assist.
But Shelton State would take the lead for good at 33-31 when LaTascya Duff made a 3-pointer. The Lady Bucs would be up 40-34 at halftime.
Shelton State was up 48-38 early in the third quarter when Jones was called for a pair of technical fouls. The Lady Bucs would go 4-for-4 on free throws and would eventually take its longest lead of the game at 57-40 with 5:42 showing on a layup by Tiyah Johnson.
But Jones would go on a 15-3 run and get within 60-55 when
Chyna Allen (Harrison Central) made a 3-pointer with 1:07 to play in the third quarter. But a basket by Ataiya Bridges and a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Johnson gave Shelton State a 65-55 lead after three quarters.
A steal and layup by
Maya Jones (Northwest Rankin) made it 67-61 with 7:04 left. Jones was down 75-63 with just less than five minutes to play, but got within 79-74 with 1:15 remaining on a layup by
LaMiracle Sims (Moss Point).
A 3-pointer by Jones with 38.7 seconds to play made it 81-77, but the Lady Bobcats would not score again.
Haymer scored 20 points to lead Jones with 18 of those coming in the first half.
Breonca Ducksworth (West Jones) had 19 with 15 of those coming in the second half. Weathersby finished with 15.
The Lady Bobcats, 2-1, go to Coastal Alabama-North in Monroeville, Alabama, on Nov. 27.
Johnson had 28 for Shelton State with Briana Trigg scoring 14.
Shelton State, 4-0, goes to Lurleen Wallace Community College on Saturday.
